Bay City, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,813 at the 2010 census. Bay City is located in Grand Traverse County and is part of the Lansing–Washtenaw County metropolitan area. It lies on the shore of Lake Huron and has a population density of . Bay City's ZIP code is 49811. The first permanent settler in Bay City was James Fenton in 1838, although it does not appear that he built any structures there until after his death in 1841. The first post office called Bay City was established in 1848, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town site was patented to David Hersey on November 5, 1851, by John Czolgoszek; however, no buildings were erected until later that year when the first Methodist Church building began operations as a meeting place for local farmers and others who desired religious services without traveling to Lansing or other towns within range for worshiping services. In 1855-1856 George Hohman laid out what are now four sides of what would become downtown Bay City onto which he constructed a two-story frame Post Office Building with an attached garage on May 9, 1857; this structure served as the nucleus for what became known as "Hohman Hall" or "the First Block." That same year Samuel Morse arrived from Baltimore with his family and set up shop near what would become Main Street before moving to Fourth street where he started another business selling newspapers (Morse & Company). By 1861 most residents had left for various reasons including labor unrest following the American Civil War which led to increased production at nearby mills while many residents relocated to Detroit due to its relative peace and relatively low taxes rates - yet even during these difficult times some families continued living adjacent to their land until they sold off all their holdings during prohibition years (1899-1902). Bay City, Michigan was founded in 1824 by H.L. Bayley and his brothers-in-law, John Ladd and George Armstrong. The town grew rapidly after it was platted on the banks of the Muskegon River. By 1830, Bay City had a population of some 400 people and consisted of a small kernel of industry including a millinery store, brewery, blacksmith shop and wagon wheel manufacturer. In 1834, Bay City became the first municipality in Michigan to have an elected board of supervisors. The town's prosperity would eventually be undermined by its location on the border between two newly acquired states - during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), California attacked Bay City while Michigan defended its citizens; this attack destroyed much of the town's infrastructure and commerce. In 1855, Bay City merged with neighboring Stroudsburg to form what is now known as Stroudsburg–Bay City Township (although most residents still call themselves "BayCityians"). The townsfolk were not content with their newlocation though; they desired more autonomy than their larger neighbor enjoyed. This led to several skirmishes between bay cityians and those from Stroudsburg during the late 1800s through early 1900s which ultimately led to increased animosity towards both sides – until recently little has been known about these events that caused such discordance in one of America's earliest communities. Due to efforts by community members over the years there has been significant renovation/updating done to various aspects of bay city history including: buildings including churches (Stroudsburg United Methodist Church located on Main Street today) ; businesses such as a laundry service operated by Mrs. Aiken for many years until 1957; memorials erected throughoutthe community such as Veterans Memorial Park located at First Avenue South & Third Street ); archaeological digs conducted at local historic sites such as Fort Dearborn (now part of Ford Motor Company headquarters) ; vibrant arts scenes taking place throughout downtown during Art Walk events each year ;and even occasional contests or exhibitions held in memory or tributeof departed friends or family members who reside withinbbaycitynmi
