Bay City is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Bay County. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron and has a total area of 36 square miles (93 km²). The first European settlers in Bay City were French colonists who arrived in 1795 and named it after their stronghold, Bayonne, France. They built Fort Michilimackinac as part of an attempt to control English traders shipping into the region. The British burned down Fort Michilimackinac in 1814 in what is known as the Battle of July 4th. In 1847, Bay City became part of the Michigan Territory when that territory was organized from parts of Indiana, Ohio and Canada. In 1957, Bay City became a city again when it merged with neighboring Muskegon Heights to form one municipality. In 1984, Muskegon Heights separated from Bay City to become its own municipality again. In 2006, BayCity received approval from the Michigan Department of Community Development to construct a new $30 million development called Midtown Detroit which would include massive new housing units and businesses adjacent to both Lakeshore Drive and I-675/I-69 exits on Woodward Avenue near downtown Detroit. The project was originally estimated to be completed by 2020 but has been postponed multiple times due to various setbacks including problems with funding sources and permits required by other jurisdictions nearby including Hamtramck Township and Dearborn Heights

Bay City is a town in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 784 at the 2010 census. Bay City is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Bay City were Muskegonians who founded a trading post on the shores of Lake Superior in 1824. In 1827, they moved their post to what is now Downtown Bay City and named it after their home state of Michigan. The original trading post was located east of downtown on the shore of Cedar Point (now called Harbor Heights). In 1830, a new trading post was built on the west bank of Mackinac River just south of present-day downtown Bay City. It was known as "The Gilded Age Post." In 1853, Bay City became an incorporated municipality and by 1870 it had reached its peak population with some 1,500 residents. However, during the Panic years (1873-75) stress from economic conditions caused many businesses to close or merge and production dropped significantly in Bay City; however, it rebounded quickly and by 1880 had regained most if not all its former prosperity. In 1898, following passage of the Morrill Act which provided for land grants to colleges and universities throughout America (the University of Michigan being one such recipient), Bay City became one of only three cities in Michigan to be granted university status; also included were Detroit and Lansing. At this time there were only eight universities in America whileMichigan had over twenty-five! After several years as an unincorporated village bay city annexed that portion of Lapeer County lying northward along Mackinac River excepting Muskegon Heights which continued to remain an independent village until 1907 when it too merged into bay city effective July 1st that year under new ordinance # 9G § 2(1) & 3(a)). Aftermaths left behind numerous warehouses still standing today including The Hanna Cotton Mill Complex – once home to UAW Local 614 – current day Macy’s Department Store – former Armoury Building now home to FirstEnergy Stadium operations & residential units dating back To 1886
Bay City was founded by John F. Mason in 1825 as a small community on the east side of the bay. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important commercial and industrial center during the mid-19th century. Bay City became a municipality in 1875, and experienced rapid growth during the 20th century, culminating in its incorporation as a city in 1954. Bay City has since struggled to maintain its recent growth pace, but remains an important cultural and economic center for the region.
