During World War II, Bay City played an important role in support activities around Detroit; its munitions plant produced military supplies that were essential for war effort across North America. The plant closed after the war but left a lasting legacy on baycity: numerous businesses continue operations today thanks to their proximity to GM's former site. Additionally, several structures erected during World War II remain standing – including George Waddell Hall (now home to Wayne State University) and USS United States (R-33).
