In 1870, Bay City became one of four cities within Grand Rapids Township when that township was created from parts of Washtenaw and Wayne counties. It remained a separate municipality until 1893 when it joined with other municipalities within Grand Rapids Township to form the current city government. The original plat for what would become Bay City showed only two blocks on either side of Market Street between State and Porter Streets - this would be enlarged throughout much later development including adding more streets and blocks northward into downtown while keeping Market Street as its main artery bisecting everything else on one side (the east side today remains largely rural). One reason why BayCity grew so quickly during its early years may have been due to its location just southwest of Lansing as well as being served by major railroads which made goods transportation easy and affordable for businesses across Michigan/Canada/Wisconsin etc.. One major shift that came about with incorporation though was that voting rights were granted to non-Mormons instead of having them given automatically to members elected through property qualifications or election bylaws like previous municipalities had done previously
