The history of Bay City stretches back to 1824 when it was known as "Byram". In 1835, it became the first incorporated village in Bay County and remained so until 1959. Prior to that time, it was a part of Washtenaw County.

As development occurred within these townships over time individual families began buying larger tracts so they could have more than one acre (0 .5 hectare) piece of property under cultivation at one time or another - this led eventually to seven villages forming within Bay City today: Albion (founded 1865), Addison (1871), Arlington Heights (1876), Douglas Heights (1901), Gaylord Park Village/Garden Area/Battle Creek Village/Bay City PeninsulaVillage/BayCity PeninsulaTownship (1920), Harbor Springs(1925), Iron Pointe(1930) and Washtenaw Township(1935). The opening up of natural resources such as coal seams near Flint during this time also contributed heavily to growth rates throughout much rural Michigan during this period - something that has remained largely unchanged over many years since then!
