Additionally, vast amounts of munitions were produced here during World War II by companies such as Ford Motor Company and Alcoa. Today, Battle Creek is an important cultural center within Michigan with a rich history dating back to its early residents. It is also home to numerous businesses and organizations which support local commerce and community development.

On January 1, 1851, Battle Creek became a city under the terms of an act of Congress approved on December 17, 1850. The first mayor was John Wetherbee and the first five councilors were Elisha Wright (1st), Ebenezer Beecher (2nd), Amos Slater (3rd), and Jeremiah Davenport (4th). By 1860, there were over 20 businesses in Battle Creek with a population of over 3100 people! During World War II, Battle Creek served as one of more than sixty U.S.-based military bases located throughout Great Britain and North America used duringWWII to support Allied forces engaged in war effort including airborne invasion operations and ground combat against Nazi Germany and Japan In 1951 City Council voted to change its name to Detroit which had been chosen as the new name for all urban areas within Wayne County following passage of legislation called "An Act to establishDetroit Municipal Corporation" That same year also saw enactment of "Emergency Management Plan No 2-1951" which later led to comprehensive Community Planning Authority established within City Hall Detroit's rapid expansion during this time resulted in significant growth pressures on many aspects of life - particularly housing prices which began rapidly rising around this time With limited land available for new development throughout much of downtown Detroit until well into the 1970sConsequently many older neighborhoods such as east central Detroit experienced rapid displacement upriver due to increased demand from developers for housing near key freeway intersections . This process continued into the 1980s with redevelopment taking place along Gratiot Avenue culminating in what is now Midtown Detroit

In 1898, Battle Creek became a city and again had its own government before being merged with Lansing in 1967.
