In 1868, Battle Creek was the site of one of the most dramatic gunfights in Michigan history. On July 16th, 1868, three men- brothers Charles and George Hinkle, and their friend Samuel Colt- fought a pitched battle with 8 to 10 Chinese men at a farmstead on the east side of town. The Hinkle brothers were killed in the fight and Colt took refuge in a barn. As night fell, he made his way out through an opening in the barn and sprinted across a field to safety. He escaped capture by surprise and returned home before being captured himself two days later. The skirmish is credited with starting the American Civil War. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant had been planning to march on Detroit but was forced to abort his plans due to Confederate threats against Battle Creek. news of this event spread through Michigan and soon General Dearborn was leading forces against Grant's army near Battle Creek. The battle is also said to have started the war between America's northern white supremacists (the " Know-Nothings") and southern black slaves (the "Unconditional Nationalists").

After years of debate over whether or not to become Detroit's second city vote results showed that approximately 60% residents preferred to keep their smalltown character while 40% wanted greater metropolitan status

By 1830, this mill had produced over $1 million worth of lumber each year which allowed for construction of many buildings in downtown Battle Creek including City Hall (now known as First Unitarian Church) and courthouse building (now used as an office complex). In 1840, two brothers—William Haines and Jesse Hull—founded one of America's earliest railroad companies – The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company – which helped make Battle Creek into an industrial center during its early years thanks to its access to raw materials from across Canada via railways such as The Great Western Railway Company’s Lake Erie line into Illinois (and then Ohio). This industry propelled Camp Randall Stadium – home to college football’s first championship game – into being oneof America’s most important municipal landmarks during Prohibition era America with beer sales totaling more than $100 million annually generating annual revenue that supported numerous public services including street lighting and road maintenance; Camp Randall Stadium also hosted several other high profile events such as baseball’s first professional world Series game between Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians played there on October 15th 1903 attended by over 60,000 people;[2] prohibition ended officially in 1933 but alcohol continued play at local venues until well into World War II when it finally vanished from American society completely due largely to excise taxes levied upon it by government officials following prohibition legislation passed by Congress HearstControl Act Sponsor: Daniel Dennett [3]
