At least one battle resulted in fatalities here: On July 16th 1861 an engagement occurred on Jackson Road west of town where Confederate General Jubal Early lost control over his brigade after routing them northward through Battle Creek against orders from Richmond HQ to cross the river into northern Indiana at Mud Lake Rapids instead due to its steepness ( barricades had been set up ). This event led to Early being court martialed by General Ulysses S Grant who commuted his sentence to five years' hard labor for breaking military law but also recommended him for parole so he could return home to lead an insurrection against Lincoln's government should it come back into power (he would be pardoned after serving three years). "In 1862," according to historian David Mollenkopf "the battle ground shifted from Ford Township eastward... across Elm Street [to] 5th Street just south of today’s Old Main Building], Holmesburg Road ran parallel thereto northeast and then turned southeast... The battlefield lay athwart Holmesburg Road about halfway between today’s intersection with Fifth Street NW and today’s corner with Elm Street NE."
