In 1868, Captain George Haggerty erected a Gun Sight at his bakery in Battle Creek which became known as "The Gables" Gun Sight. Between 1880-1890, the First National Rifle Association (FNA) constructed a facility in Battle Creek called "The Armory". This building housed an arsenal of rifles and shotguns as well as a range for shooting targets. The FNA also provided instruction ongun use to civilians. In 1898, the state of Michigan passed an act which made it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to possess any type of firearm without a license from their government. As a result, many people who had bought firearms before this law went into hiding or sold their firearms to friends and family members who could still operate them without penalty.

Of those, 276 (or 74%) were white and 248 (or 68%) were Black or African American according to race alone. Battle Creek is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Allegany County. The population was 37,898 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest municipality in Allegany County after Lansing and Ann Arbor. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Battle Creek was Samuel Phelps in 1814. Battle Creek became a township on December 12, 1834, from parts of Muskegon Heights Township and Oakland Township. On February 14, 1855, it became an incorporated village when all but one of its residents voted to become one entity under the name "Battle Creek". The village was renamed Battle Creek on November 24, 1912 by Action Committee on renameing cities following prohibition laws then existing in many states including Michigan. In 1870s Battle Creek's manufacturing industry included shipbuilding and other engineering firms such as Eaton & Stephenson; paper products such as Wabash Paper Products Co.; automobiles; and mining enterprises such as United Mining Company (later Saginaw Mining Company). In 1898 General Motors opened its factory here for producing Buick models which led to increased economic development downtown; however this also meant increased traffic congestion on Woodward Avenue downtown which caused pollution problems that continue to be significant today. On July 1, 1969 Battle Creek's municipal merger with nearby Grand Rapids made it one of only two Michigan municipalities to join what had been called "The Big Three"--Detroit/Ann Arbor/Grand Rapids--in what promised unprecedented cooperative effort across town governmental functions including planning and zoning services while sharing resources like police officers and fire department personnel among their three constituent municipalities. This unique form of government survived until 2003 when it was replaced by a more traditional single-tier government characterized by heavy reliance upon central government funding sources for operating costs even as individual municipalities compete for tax dollars through special elections (and sometimes through austerity measures such as reducing library hours)
Battle Creek was a small, unincorporated community in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. It is now a ghost town due to the decline of the nearby Battle Creek National Forest.
