Battle Creek is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Flint River. The population was 41,887 at the 2010 census, up from 31,604 at the 2000 census. It is the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit and it is also one of the most populous cities east of Interstate I-95. The Battle Creek area had been inhabited by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans for more than two centuries before European explorers arrived in what is now Michigan in 1701. The area was part of Ottawa County until 1835 when it became part of Washtenaw County because United States President Andrew Johnson approved Missouri statehood over Washington D.C.. However, as Washtenaw County grew larger and its boundaries changed (including includes parts of Dearborn and Oakland counties), Battle Creek remained an unincorporated community within Washtenaw County until 1959 when it became an incorporated city with its own government Michigan State University founded a veterinary school here in 1846 which later became Wayne State University; both schools were closed following World War II but reopened in 1948 as Wayne State University–Detroit School of Veterinary Medicine with research capacity first established at MSU’s Parkland Campus while all other campuses were closed during World War II due to budgetary restrictions placed upon universities by then Republican President Franklin D Roosevelt). In 1957 all veterinary school functions moved to Wayne State University–Detroit School Of Veterinary Medicine where they remain today as well as many graduate programs including law, pharmacy and surgery among others In 1951 local entrepreneur James Fenton opened what would become one of Battle Creek's earliest businesses: Fenton's grocery store which he operated until his death in 1984 Fenton was followed by several other entrepreneurs who started similar businesses throughout the years including hardware store owner Lester Woldenmayer who built Woldenmayer Hardware into one of America’s largest retailers; Joel Sussman who started Sussman Paper Weavers into one of America’s largest papermakers; Harry Myers who founded JMI Paper Makers into one of America’s largest paper manufacturers; Bob Kappeldorfer whose company began making artificial turf products from organic matter used in agricultural production All these businesses successively helped contribute to what has come to be known as "the Downtown District" or simply "Downtown". This commercial district experienced significant growth during the late 20th century with office towers being erected along Woodward Avenue leading southward from downtown towards Midtown Lansing while smaller buildings near campus continued to housing various cultural organizations such as theaters and libraries additionally becoming home to some major department stores such as Sears & Roebuck
