The Battle Creek area was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as part of The Great Lakes region. A post office called Battle Creek was established in 1812, and remained in operation until 1971. In 1834, Alpheus Dowling founded what would become Midland Railway Company with primary goal to bring goods from Chicago to Detroit through Battle Creek and Midland City. The railway became part of the US National Railroad system after it was purchased by UP in 1865. In 1892, Midland Railway Company merged with Canadian Pacific Railway to form CP&M which continued to be headquartered in Battle Creek until its sale to Northern Securities Corporation (NSC) in 1998. In 1898, NSC began construction on River Rouge Dam which would eventually become one of America's largest hydroelectric power plants; however, it failed to complete before being taken over by United States Army Corps of Engineers for use as a military base during World War I (1917-1918). Post-war growth due primarily to heavy manufacturing led NSC to build many new buildings including an important downtown shopping district known as "The Loop" that still exists today. During the late 1960s and early 1970s battles were fought between students at nearby Wayne State University over control of a slum located near campus called Overlook Park - later renamed Campus Martius - leading ultimately to a takeover by local police forces that ended any further Student activity on site while classes were held elsewhere on campus. However some elements within university management persisted with control continuing intermittently until 1984 when then-President John Engler signed Executive Order 6055 giving direct authority for full-time battle creek police officers instead of just policemen assigned sporadically outside enforcement actions which had been taking place for years previous without Incident Command System or incident tracking facilities having been set up anywhere near campus proper since at least 1969! This effectively stripped local squads (and their predecessors) completely of any ability whatsoever even if they did have an emergency response plan or establishment inside their patrol jurisdiction...the result being lawlessness on and off campus during particularly chaotic periods characterized variously as 'riot' or 'student demonstration'. Consequently several high profile cases where township or village law enforcement turned up unexpectedly unannounced/unexpectedly resulted not only from physical altercations but also property damage done subsequent thereto either directly or indirectly attributable both party(s) involved typically receiving significantly harsher sentences than those who had merely caused no physical injury although often all evidence against them rested simply on circumstantial guilt rather than overwhelming forensic evidentiary support!

In 1837, a group of farmers from up north decided to put down roots in what would become Battle Creek because they could not find land to farm in their area. They named their new community after General George Washington's army's victory over British forces at Bunker Hill in 1775. In 1855, the first steamboat reached Battle Creek and took passengers and cargo upriver to St. Josephsville on Grand River. The town grew rapidly around this time as people started using the boat service to get around being afraid of water traffic on the river system. By 1870, Battle Creek had a post office, store, hotel and school - all built by local entrepreneurs or donated by others in order to keep things moving forward quickly while people were still trying to figure out how everything worked back then (steamboats actually did not arrive until much later). The Panic of 1893 hit hard across America and particularly in Michigan; however, businesses like those owned by John Daugherty managed to stay open despite tough competition from elsewhere due largely to his marketing skills which dovetail well with strategy that he had developed himself as an insurance salesman during his earlier career as an executive for various companies including Amalgamated Copper Mines Incorporated (ACM)
