Auburn Hills is a city in the State of Michigan, United States. The population was 26,643 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oakland County. Auburn Hills is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is one of the most affluent suburbs in Michigan. The community began as a small farming village on the banks of the Rouge River in 1871 when Augustus Kelley, an American Civil War veteran and entrepreneur founded Auburn Hills Land and Improvement Company to develop land east of Woodward Avenue in what is now Auburn Hills Township. Kelley's company soon became one of Americas most successful agricultural companies with over 100 stores selling food products such as bread, milk, eggs, butter, cheese and apples from country stores located throughout its territory. In 1916, he sold his shares in the company to his son-in-law Julius Rosenwald for $2 million. Rosenwald was instrumental in helping create America's first large department store chain - Sears Roebuck & Co - which opened its first store in Auburn Hills on November 11, 1919 (the same day that General Motors Corporation opened its new headquarters). Over time Sears acquired other retailers including JCPenney (1924), Kmart (1927), Macy's (1929), Sears Roebuck & Co Incorporated (1971) and Kress Corporation (1984). In 1830, an act was passed by the Michigan Legislature which defined Washtenaw County as follows: "The Township including all parts lying east and southwesterly thereof within said county limits and east and northwest thereof to an extent equal to that portion included within said township" In 1836, General William Tecumseh Sherman attacked Fort Dearborn during his march across Michigan attempting to open up Central America to American traders. Sherman's forces destroyed much property along their way but managed to reach Detroit before he could retreat back across the border into Canada. As a result of this attack on Fort Dearborn, many buildings and land holdings near downtown Auburn Hills were taken over by artillery pieces from Grant's army as part as souvenirs for future soldiers on their return home from war! This event also helped spur development around downtown Auburn Hills as several businesses became interested in renting space inside or near Fort Dearborn so they could continue selling military supplies and equipment to troops fighting abroad! In 1840, Augustus Woodward purchased 6 lots around what is now northeast cornerof Main Street and Gratiot Avenue from David Wilcox for $2 per lot! Woodward built his house here known today as Woodward House (which still stands). agnewcomputersystems inc., later known as AMD (Advanced Micro Devices), moved here from Rochester MI in 1944! On November 2nd 1945, AMD received its government contract worth $405 million dollars!! At that time only 4 other companies had won such a large government contract!! Today AMD employs more than 10 000 people worldwide including 1500 employees in China!!! One hundred years ago today AMD made history by becoming one OF THE FIRST COMPANIES TO WIN A LARGE GOVERNMENT CONTRACT!!!
