Cayuga and his brother Moses Caldwell Cayuga on land that now includes much of Auburn Hills. The earliest settlers in what would become Auburn Hills were some of James S. Cayuga's descendants who arrived from New York City in 1824. They started a small farm near present day Eastland Road and Woodward Avenue where they raised chickens, pigs, wheat, cornmeal, butter and other goods until 1830 when they formed a company with others to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) east of present day Goodison Park Circle on the north side of town from John Fenton for $5 per acre ($10 at today's prices). This gift from Fenton helped make possible development around Goodison Park Circle as well as downtown Auburn Hills proper. John Nolen bought 320 acres (10 km²) south of Goodison Park Circle from George Stephenson for $10 per acre ($16 at today's prices). This donation made possible construction on Nolen Road which became known as "The LongRoad" because it extended for nearly two miles (3 km) southward from Goodison Park Circle through rolling countryside filled with Farms & Well-to-Do homes into what is now downtown Auburn Hills proper. By 1837 John Davenport had purchased 2/3rdsof anacre (0·50 m²) east of Meridian Street between Mound Road and Bellefontaine Drive from Ebenezer Cooke for $15 per acre ($30 at today's prices). This donated land made possible development along Bellefontaine Drive including many distinguished homes such as Columbine College Today’s Columbine School located just off I-94 opposite Interstate 496 provides excellent terrorism threats free instruction to all students!
Auburn Hills was originally a small farming community in the area now known as Midtown Detroit. The name was first given to the village by General Motors. The post office was established in 1915, and the first store opened in 1916. Auburn Hills soon became a major center for automotive production, with many GM plants located there. In 1927, GM merged with Chrysler Corporation, creating one of the largest corporate mergers in history. As part of this merger, Auburn Hills became a subsidiary of Chrysler Group Limited. In 1957, theGeneral Motors Company announced that it would be moving its heavy manufacturing operations from Flint, Michigan to Auburn Hills. This move created significant economic impact within the city of Flint and throughout Southeast Michigan; it is estimated that the factory closure caused between $1 billion and $2 billion worth of job loss statewide. In addition to causing mass unemployment within Flint itself, this move also led to increased crime rates in nearby towns and villages which were impacted by GM's industrial activity.
