Mr. Baird had come to America from Scotland with his family some years earlier intending to become a settler in what would become Detroit but failed to find success there so he decided to move his family northward into what is now Muskegon County instead. In 1836 Mr .Stephenson had arrived from England with similar plans but soon realized that he needed more land to farm than could be found east of Cadillac Street due to lack of natural resources such as timber or coal available thereabouts; accordingly he purchased around one-seventh section (later called "The Loop") of land east of present-day Gratiot Ave., bounded by North avenues on the north, First Street on the south, Ionia Road on the west, Bruce Boulevard onthe east Ebenezer Baird took over management of this tract from George Stephenson when he died young in 1841 while still residing at The Loop site In 1840 John Fenton acquired additional property along Gratiot Ave., becoming owner/operator thereof until 1863 when it passed into ownership by Wm Browning who operated it until 1916 when it became part of Auburn Hills Township Starting about 1890 various other farmers sold acreage adjacent to The Loop including Driggs & Dunlap who owned most eastern corner lot remaining today before finally selling it all off for development purposes in 1926 Mrs . Clara Barton donated her home at 204 Saginaw St between Burrard & Woodward Avenues (now known as Dearborn Heights) for use as a high school library during World War II which eventually became closed due to demolition later that year However prior to closing she also donated many books which were moved inside after closure
In 1837, the first permanent white settlement in Auburn Hills was made. The community of Auburn was named for General John P. Morgan, who died in 1836. On December 8, 1837, a plat of land was filed with the Michigan state government for the village of Auburn Hills. The plat included a town square and three blocks of surrounding homes. In 1840, the village had a population of 50 people and two stores. One store was on Woodward Avenue and one on Main Street. In 1845, the village had a population of 100 people and four stores. Two stores were on Woodward Avenue and two were on Main Street. There were also six residences in town at that time. In 1854, when Oakland County was organized into counties, Auburn Hills became part of Mackinac County. In 1870, when Lansing County was created, Auburn Hills became part of it too. When Lansing County merged with Washtenaw County in 1907, Auburn Hills became a part of that county as well
