One of the most famous soft gun cases in Ann Arbor is the Case of the Three Musketeers. This case began with an arrest on July 15, 1911, of three men, including an Ann Arbor man named John L. The trial began on August 3 and ended on September 10 after only three days. On August 9, 1911, Scudder was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. He appealed his sentence but lost on October 7th (the day before Thanksgiving). On January 5th 1912, another Ann Arbor man named Harry Sibley was arrested for possessing a pistol without a license. The trial started on January 12th but did not end until February 20th because Sibley continued to challenge his punishment through appeals even though he had already served two years of his five-year sentence at the time of his arrest. The first handgun case was filed by Mrs. Anna Kappelgraber on October 10th of that year. This case concerned a .22 calibre revolver which she had bought from a seller at the corner of University Avenue and State Street. The prosecutor argued that this weapon should not have been registered because it was used in “a crime which cannot be justified by its mere nature”. In response, Mrs. Kappelgraber argued that her use of the weapon “was no different than any other lawful citizen” and that it would have been difficult for her to refuse registration because she did not own any other firearms. She was successful in getting the weapon registered and it is still held today within the city limits.
