This marked the beginning of Ann Arbor's growth as a center for trade and culture. In 1830, during construction on what would become Central Park West (later renamed Park Avenue), ground broke for Michigan State University which would become one of America's leading universities. During World War II (1941-1945) many key industrial plants were located in or near Ann Arbor including those that produced aluminumand 1942 production helped drive Detroit into bankruptcy; however ANN ARBOR retains some highly significant industry including auto parts manufacturing currently employing over 5700 workers[2]. Today's economy depends heavily upon research conducted at various universities withinAnnArbor such as Northwestern University School Of Veterinary Medicine(now Northwestern Medicine) as well as technology companies such as Intel(int). In addition thereto major employers include Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital & Medical Center (now DeVos Children’s Hospital), Arboretum Hills Murray Hill Village,[3] Township Wexford [4], Mount Pleasant Farms and countless small businesses throughout our cityscape
