In 1814, John Saginaw founded Saginaw Township on land that later became East Lansing and developed it into one of Upper Michigan's most important townships; Ann Arbor followed suit soon afterward. In 1825, Territorial Governor Isaac Brock approved an act creating Washtenaw County within Michigan; Ann Arbor was included within that county as part of the new territory over which Brock had authority as governor. In 1840s and 1850s word spread through upper Michigan about potential gold mines located near Saginaw Bay; in 1851–1853 three men – James Halliday McDowell (the father of contemporaneous American author Jules Verne), Solomon Thomas Cook (an Englishman who had traveled to North America), and John Norvell – prospected for gold near present-day downtown Ann Arbor while staying at Griggs House under then-Governor Stevens’ guidance along with others associated with Fordham University’s fledgling law department (now known as Case Western Reserve University). While some initial claims for property around today’s Downtown Arena were made during this time period there is no evidence those holdings ever amounted to anything more than speculation orfolk tales passed down from generation to generation until finally being realized only after World War II when valuable minerals were discovered nearby including copper bearing hills just east of town on what is now Washtenaw Hills Road In 1863 local farmer Horace Greeley organized a protest against slavery called "The Great Northern Anthem", which eventually led to events related to The Emancipation Proclamation twelve years later while living in Dresden Heights north of town leading up to The Battle Of Gettysburg where over 100 thousand Americans died primarily due to weather conditions including extreme cold temperatures that winter even reaching below 0 degrees Fahrenheit (). On July 4th 1870 an event occurred in downtownAnnArbor resulting in 2 people getting killed when a bomb exploded inside Grosse Pointe High School resulting from ongoing political unrest throughout much of northern Lower Michigan prior thereto
