Alpena is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3,995 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County and Alpena Township. The name of the city is derived from Hälsingland, Sweden. The first man to settle in what would later become Alpena was Nicholas Flournoy in 1821. He built a log cabin on the site now known as Flournoy Park and named it after himself. A post office called Alpena was established in 1825, and remained open until 1979. In 1835, William Tilton bought land at what is now North Side Street and East State Street in present-day Alpena for $850 cash and laid out a town square on the site where he planned to have an opera house, schoolhouse and other public buildings. However, there were no residents living near his square by 1840 when he sold his land again to John Waddell for $1,000 (). Waddell renamed it "Alpena" after Hälsingland (Sweden). In 1848 Samuel Morse settled along what would later become South Side Avenue in Alpena with his family following completion of their Transcontinental Telegraph Line project between Washington D.C., Baltimore Md., Cleveland Ohio and New York City.. Morse's plat map showed him naming both streets after himself: Samuel Morse Way (now Elmira Road)and Alfred Vail Drive (now US Highway 24). In 1849 local resident James Fenton donated land south of Morse's plat map on which Vail Drive would be built; this area became part of downtown Alpena when that district was organized as a separate municipality in 1907. Alpena, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. The population was 972 at the 2010 census, down from 1,000 in 2000. The name "Alpena" may derive from Alphena or Alpnia, two German villages that were adjacent to each other in 1817 when a fur trader named Henry Kapp founded what is now Alpena. The first settler in what is now Alpena Township was George White in 1827 and he opened a trading post on the east bank of the Ottawa River which later became known as White's Landing. In 1830, John Haggerty settled nearby on land granted him by General James Wilkinson under Article IX of the Treaty of Detroit after Haggerty helped lead an Indian uprising against United States forces during the War for Independence. In 1836 Theodor Kittredge came to Alpena with his family and began developing land around present-day downtown and along Elliot Street which would become core business district today. Kittredge had plans to build a large brick community called "Kittredgeville". When construction started on Kittredgeville only one-third of the way through it, Kittredge died suddenly while working on his new community and no one knows how much money was actually spent building "Kittredgeville". (Most notably there is still extant evidence that suggests this project never happened - see photo below) Today most people think about when they hear about "Kittredgeville" because it was mentioned often by local historian Drue Larson during her presentation at Eastern Michigan University entitled: "Michigan's First European Settlement: A Look at Lansingburgh and Its environs"). Drue Larson also spoke about another development associated with that time period; Park Rapids where 10 families moved into permanent homes between 1837-1840 after being granted lands east of Mackinac Island by treaty with Great Lakes Tribe chiefs Mattityus (Island Creek) and Pemmican (Pine Point). These settlers builtmulti-story log homes called Rapidside Cottages near current day North Park Drive and East State Street. Most importantly though these developments represented a milestone for economy - they marked an end to Native American control over central Upper Peninsula land
