In 1854, Alpena's first Optician opened his store on Washington Street. In the early 1900s, the opticians in Alpena became one of the largest optical businesses in Michigan. By 1923, their store had moved to its current location on Meridian Avenue. The opticians here were among the most well-known and respected in their field. Alpena is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Alpena County. The population was 27,545 at the 2010 census, making it the third most populous municipality in Michigan and the most populous city east of the Mississippi River. The first train to come through Alpena arrived in 1886 from Battle Creek via Saginaw and Kalamazoo with lumber being unloaded at Henschel's Mill then shipped by boat down Big Rapids Creek for shipment to Detroit or other cities across America. In 1907, Henry Ford brought his Model T car from Dearborn Heights to Alpena where he test drove it on State Street before driving it into Dearborn Circuit Court Square for formal testing purposes only! He later purchased this property and made his home here permanently! Today you can still see evidence of that event – one end of State Street has been replaced by a large parking lot while Ford's original house still stands (although its roof has been replaced). During World War II, many people worked at General Motors plants located in nearby Flint or Ypsilanti but few people know about this because GM closed those plants afterwarthly due to wartime production quotas! When Alpena open its doors again afterthe war had ended however, many jobs were available here such as automotive assemblers and toolmakers etceteras so growth ensued!
