Hitchcock opened his grocery store at 5 Main Street which became one ofMichigan's earliest chain stores. After World War II ended, large industries left Detroit for new economic opportunities in America; including auto manufacturing companies such as Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation who founded their plants hereabouts with new technology while other manufacturers shifted production elsewhere due to competition from Japanese imports beginning in 1948. This period also saw major changes within the community: housing prices increased markedly due to growing demand for labor during wartime shortages but decreased afterwards as more jobs moved away from urban cores into suburbs; furthermore downtown business districts declined gradually as strip malls replaced older warehouses/factories until they completely disappeared during the late 1990s recession when auto assembly plants closed throughout metro Detroit leaving only low-wage service works locations open scattered throughout northwestern Michigan serving primarily rural areas outside of Grand Rapids
The city of Alpena was founded in 1824 by Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest. The city's first store was opened on Michigan Avenue. In 1827, the city made the decision to become a Republican Party stronghold in order to support Abraham Lincoln during his election campaign. In 1871, Alpena became a territorial municipality and later an incorporated city. In 1898, Alpena annexed the village of Eastpointe which had been located east of the City limits since 1892. Alpena was one of the most heavily populated areas in Michigan at its peak between 1920 and 1940 with over 120,000 residents. However, as population growth slowed throughout the 1940s and 50s, jobs left Alpena for other cities in central Michigan while tax rates remained high relative to other Midwest cities. In recent years there has been much redevelopment taking place within and around Alpena including new apartment complexes, hotels, retail stores and restaurants; however concern remains about future population growth potential given low job opportunities and limited public investmentgrade land available for development outside of downtown
