Alpena, Michigan is a small town located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 947 at the 2010 census. It was originally named for Alpena Point on the Detroit River, but it changed its name to Alpena in 1912 because of a dispute about whether the word 'alpena' represented an Alpine mountain or an agricultural valley. The city's first settler was George Aitken, who arrived in 1824 and built a log cabin at what is now known as Main Street. Aitken became one of the early promoters of alcohol prohibition in Michigan and died from consumption of wine while living in Alpena. In 1848, Isaac Seward erected a sawmill and gristmill on current Elm Street; these mills were destroyed by fire in 1892. John Laird purchased the mill buildings and operated them until he sold them to Drainage Engineer Augustus H. Eaton in 1903. Eaton developed Drainage Canal Company land east of downtown into industrial areas that are still seen today including Alpena Village (now part of Midland), Old Mill District (now part of East Lansing), and Lockwood Park (now part of Detroit). Eaton also founded Aidan Mills which manufactured paper products until 1951 when it merged with Guggenheim Paper Company to form Guggenheim-Aidan Paper Products Incorporated (GAPPI). In 1957, GAPPI acquired Northwestern Paper Co., making it one company among many manufacturers that would merge over time to form Allied inkcoating companies—the largest inkcoater producer outside North America until 1984 when Brunswick Co.,Inc.—became Dow Corning Corporation. Today, Alpena is home to several cultural attractions: the restored Main Street Depot which served as a local post office from 1890 until 1964; downtown's First National Bank building dating back to 1865; Alpena High School which opened for classes on September 15, 1907; and Ellington Municipal Airport which serves regional air traffic control services from nearby Grand Rapids International Airport
Alpena is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 31,959 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Livingston County and one of its three urban areas. Alpena is bordered by the cities of Midland, Mount Pleasant, and Orion to the south and east; Albion to the north; and Saginaw to the west. The first permanent European settler in what is now Alpena was Nicholas Carbonaro, who founded a cabin on Lower Peninsula's Muskegon River in 1814. Carbonaro's cabin was destroyed by Indians in 1815 but his son John built a more substantial cabin near present-day downtown Alpena about two years later. In 1836, German immigrants named Bauer arrived from Lower Saxony with their families and began farming on land that would become incorporated as Alpena Township in 1837. The town grew rapidly after it became part of Michigan Territory following Wisconsin's admission into the Union as a state in 1848. By 1860, Alpena had 575 residents living within its limits: 100% white settlers – most of whom were Germans – while only 10% Native American or Métis people lived there (the remaining 80% being assimilated French Canadians). By 1870, when Michigan became an open-door state for all Americans regardless of race or religion, African Americans had also arrived here through various migrations from southern United States during that decade (just as they were doing across much of America). However, they did not gain full citizenship until well after World War II; this process took longer due to discrimination against black Americans throughout many parts of America at that time."
