Alpena is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Alpena is part of the Kalamazoo–Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Alpena were the Potawatomi, who established a village here around 1800. In 1836, settlers from Ohio founded the town on land bought from the Ottawa and Ojibwe nation. By 1871, when Michigan became a state, Alpena had grown to over 1,000 people. A post office called Alpena was established in 1872, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. The town's first mayor was Wm. Ayer Jr.. The first school opened in 1870 as a one-room schoolhouse with 11 students. It continued as such until 1913 when an addition gave it a roomy facility that could seat 30 students; later also upgraded to include a gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. In 1912, voters approved annexation by Portage County; however this did not happen until 1916 due to controversy surrounding the proposed boundaries of the county at that time (the towns of Battle Creek and Roscommon were annexed into Dearborn County). When Portage County formed on January 1st 1917 it added Alpena to its east side along with other villages within its current borders including Antrimsburg and Bartlettville; these changes took effect on February 1st 1917 (). In 1933 local officials decided that automobile marketing would be better served by splitting up Alpena into two separate towns: One for light truck use only and another for all other traffic; this decision led to increased traffic congestion which caused some businesses to close down or move away from town while others were forced to merge into larger neighboring communities (). This situation eventually resolved itself when both schools merged into one large school district but motorists still continue using separate routes during morning rush hours today due to lack of another option nearby ().
