In 1839 John Lennon, son of John Lennon Sr., settled on a farm just east of present day State Street with his brother George and their parents Antoinette (née Cook) and John Lennon Sr.. They raised chickens, pigs, cows, horses and lambs until they moved to their present site near Main st & Saginaw River on December 12th 1847 where they erected a log cabin which still stands today as Pioneer Hall or Alpena Historical Museum Inc.. The town charter was granted to Alpena on January 1st 1848 by Governor Stevens Calkins as part of an effort to revive interest in township government throughout the state following a lack of success with other townships within Washtenaw County.. Alpine Township boundaries changed several times over the years primarily due to absorption into neighboring townships such as Harbor Springs (1901), Northville (1912), White Flint (1914), Eastman Heights (1920), Westland Heights (1924)&Thornwood Village annexation from Albion Township 1966). In 1978 when Albion Township merged with Washtenaw County it became known as Alpena Township again. The current boundaries were established when all but one acre of east side Main St., between Saginaw River & US-2 were annexed from Albion Township for use as park land for residents within new township limits

Alpena is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan on the southern shore of Lake Superior. The population was 452 at the 2010 census, down from 494 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Worthington–Grand Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located within Kalamazoo County. The land for Alpena was first settled by Native Americans in 1795 as part of Ioway territory under Treaty 6 with Great Britain. In 1824, Alpena became a town when it was organized as a county seat of Kalamazoo County. Growth began rapidly during World War II due to military production and aluminum processing plants established there by Western Electric and other companies and Alpena became an important port for munitions transportation. The city experienced rapid growth after its incorporation into Michigan in 1949, reaching 1,000 residents by 1960; however, this growth ended with the recession that struck Michigan during that decade. The city has experienced modest growth since then, reaching its current level of activity only through annexations from neighboring cities during the late 1990s and early 2000s. According to the United States Census Bureau, Alpena has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 452 people living inAlpena City limits: 344 males (51%) and 248 females (49%). Outlying areas had no population reported to them by2010 census figures or surveys conducted thereafter- including Unincorporated Washtenaw Township which includes parts adjacent to Alpena City Limits but does not have any incorporated municipal boundaries between those areas). Of note is that Because Washtenaw Township surrounds only 2/3ths or less of all city limits - it does not have voting rights or representation on local government levels like most other municipalities - it has essentially no voice in day-to-day operations or decisions made about aspects such as zoning laws or economic development strategy for either sideeastern shore community across from downtown where employment services are offered
In 1834, Alpena was founded as a small community on the banks of the Rouge River by fur traders and farmers. The first post office was established in 1835. In 1840, Alpena became part of Michigan Territory. In 1847, the City of Alpena was chartered and named after George Armstrong Custer who fought at Little Bighorn during the Mexican-American War. Alpena experienced rapid growth in the late 1800s due to its strategic location on both sides of the Rouge River between Detroit and Michiganders. The city skyline began to be constructed in earnest in 1901 with the construction of First National Bank Tower which remains one of downtown's most popular tourist attractions today. During World War II, Alpena played an important role as a military airfield providing access to western Michigan for Allied pilots flying operations against Nazi Germany. After the war, Alpena experienced significant growth as a suburban community with many high-rise buildings being built along North Main Street. However, some aspects of local life remain unchanged such as annual Fourth of July parade which attracts more than 1 million spectators over Memorial Day weekend
