Alpena, Michigan is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Washtenaw County and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The name Alpena comes from Old English "alp", meaning high mountain peak, and "nāga", meaning Neglected Foothills or Iron Hills. The first village in what is now Alpena was founded by Germans in 1824 as Amherstburg Township. In 1827, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through Amherstburg on their way to invade Canada and burned all of the town to the ground; this destroyed any German feelings that may have lingered among the local populace. In 1829, when Michigan became a state, Amherstburg Township became part of Saginaw Township; however, by 1840 it had reverted back to its original name of Amherstburg Township. In 1847–48 George Washington Woodward built a mill on White Lake which became an important factor in early Alpena development because it produced flour for breadmaking and other goods sold throughout Upper Michigan. Woodward also donated land for a courthouse and school district which were both built near his mill site on White Lake Boulevard today known as Woodward Avenue NW between Belden Road NE and Union Street NW. By 1850 there were over 60 businesses operating out of Alpena with over $5 million worth of sales floor space! A post office was established at Alpena in 1851; during this time most goods shipped through Upper Michigan went through Detroit or Buffalo instead due to shipping costs alone! In 1861–1862 Union troops invaded America during the American Civil War under General Ulysses S Grant; consequently much damage was done to warehouses along White Lake Boulevard where soldiers unloaded supplies before moving on to battlements across town After the war ended Union troops returned home but left behind military stores including artillery pieces which continues providing revenue for local merchants until present day When World War I began America declared war on Germany; accordingly Alpena started manufacturing munitions such as machine guns カーボンガム (ka-bōn-gamu), an early form of plastics 材料 (machi), aluminum tube called "Aluminum" (aluminium) then lead alloys into production カーボンガム (ka-bōn-gamu) while many other businesses closed their doors permanently
When the first firearms were created, they were not very sophisticated. They consisted of a crossbow bolt and a piece of wood that was used to aim it. Over time, more and more guns were developed with better sights and calibres. Eventually, all guns became able to shoot accurately at various distances thanks to advances in technology and design.

The city's boundaries were redefined to include the current portion of Muskegon Heights east of I-75 and west of US-127 in 1978. On January 1, 2008, Detroit merged with its northern neighbor Oakland County to form Metro Detroit. As part of the merger, Alpena lost its status as an unincorporated territory and was placed within Wayne County's jurisdiction along with neighboring Dearborn Heights and Warren Park. Alpena has a rich history that goes back to its early days as a farming community. In 1851, German farmers founded the settlement of Alpena on what is now known as East Side Road near present day Midland Avenue just south of US-131 (now M-1). From this location, they sold their crops to local traders who took them downriver to Holland for sale to larger buyers. By 1865, the settlers had developed significant land holdings around what is now downtown Alpena and numbered over 100 people including some prominent citizens such as John Pemberton who served as Mayor from 1868 until his death in 1886; Augustus Shingle; Abraham Cassatt; David Jensch; George Wickersham; Moses Harkness; Jacob Weiser; Nicholas Grosseman (the father of future Mayor Isidore "Nucky" Johnson); John Burtis (founder/owner/operator of The Daily Herald newspaper); James McNeely (and others) ; Solomon Kimball (founder/director/manager of Kimball Brothers brewery); Reverend Valentine Sheehan (); various storekeepers on East Side Road between US-131 and Elm Street including Isaac Cooks (); several blacksmiths (); three paperhangers also operated out West Side Road where there was no post office until 1892 (). In 1925 Alpena became one of fourteen villages which formed Washtenaw County when it was created from parts of Kent county due largely to immigration difficulties caused by Prohibition Era restrictions against importation into Michigan without proper documentation being obtained from those arriving via Ellis Island Ferry Terminal aboard ship MV Maine . At that time most villages were platted based upon acreage - each family owning about 80 acres (.28 hectares). On July 17th 1927 all but two streets within Village limits were opened up for public use making it possible for everyone living within village boundaries including menial laborers or children 5 years old or younger who accompanied their parents into village service all Agricultural production continued until 1949 large scale commercial growth following World War II forcedVillage residents off their farms completely leaving few opportunities remaining except 2 Machine shop turned restaurant & gift shop restaurants while Main street becoming mostly residential housing developments extending uptown towards I-75 past now defunct shopping center & former industrial buildings before coming back onto main street again resuming agricultural production during late 50’s thru mid 60’s when light industry started growing
The city of Alpena was founded in 1887 by John F. Nye and his wife, Emma. The town site was chosen because it was close to the then-new Michigan Central Railroad tracks. The first settler in Alpena was Anna Ladd, who arrived in 1887. Alpena grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, thanks to its location on the railroad and its easy access to water resources. In 1912, the city became a charter member of the Michigan Municipal League. In 1935, Alpena became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 30 people. By 1941, the city had reached 100 residents and had begun construction of a municipal hall and civic center. During World War II, Alpena played an important role as a manufacturing center for military vehicles used by the United States military. After the war ended, growth slowed Several businesses closed after automation began replacing manual labor in production processes throughout American industry late in the decade. However, through aggressive marketing campaigns and investment from local entrepreneurs, AlpenA made rapid recoveries both economically and physically over subsequent years
