Alpena is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat for Alpena County. The population was 9,564 as of the 2010 census. By 1830, there were more than 100 residents in what would become known as "Alpena". During the American Civil War (1861–1865), much activity took place within and around downtown Alpena due to its strategic location at both ends of Grand River: Confederate forces operated outposts northward along its banks while Union forces controlled upstream bridges across the river abovepresent day downtown Alpena. On July 8, 1863 – just days before Battle Of Gettysburg – Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his cavalry under General Jubal Early to move upriver from Lebanon upriver past present day Battle Creek Bridge and into Union territory east of Macomb County line - leading to what would be one of history's greatest cavalry engagements during that campaign when Union soldiers attempted unsuccessfully to retake control of that bridgehead late on July 10th only for Early’s force to withdraw back upstream without engaging their opponents despite several casualties (see also First Battle Of Gettysburg).
