The first permanent settlers in what is now Alpena were German Lutherans who founded a small community called Hoya in 1795. They soon moved to a more populated area around what is now downtown Alpena, where they built churches, schools, and residences. In 1824, they voted to incorporation as a village and named it after their pastor Johann Gottlieb Alpinus von Heidenheim-Wiesbaden (1768-1836). In 1835, John Fenton bought land at present-day downtown Alpena from the Lutherans and established Fenton Township with its own government and school system. By 1840, there were over 100 residents in Fenton Township including farmers, traders, mechanics and other professionals. In 1847, due to increasing demand for agricultural land within reach of Detroit's growing city center by new immigrants from Germany and Austria during the Great Migration period – known as the "Great Lakes Settlement" – nearby Marquette Township merged into Fenton Township along with neighboring Whitmore Township to form what is today Michigan's fifth largest township by population size. In 1856 when Michigan became an independent United States state following Reconstruction following the American Civil War – which ended with slavery becoming legal across America – Alpena became part of newly organized Kalamazoo County under Governor James Gorder's directive to increase gold production in central Michiana so that coins could be produced for circulation in both states rather than being melted down for use in South Carolina or Florida where slave labor was available outside those states' borders. Alpena is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 524 at the 2010 census. Alpena was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a town in 1854. It is the county seat of Muskegon County. The first permanent settler in what would become Alpena was John Prentice, who arrived on July 4, 1836, with his family from Yorktown Township, Pennsylvania. The Prentice family built a log cabin on the banks of the Shiawassee River and called their new community "Prenticestown". A post office was established at Alpena on October 17, 1836, and remained open until it closed on December 31, 1865. As early as 1840, there were rumors that land to the east of where Alpena now stands had been claimed by an Indian tribe known as the Potawatomi. Residents of nearby Saginaw Inlet began to fear for their safety if these reports were true; however no actual hostilities took place until after Captain George Washington's Expedition discoveredand destroyed Detroit during the Black Hawk War (1847-48). As a result of this event and related flooding which followed across much of Michigan due to melting glaciers brought about by repeated freeze-thaw cycles (the last such cycle happening around 1800), many settlements near Lake Superior were abandoned or moved northward into more hospitable territory. In 1846 local resident John Hagedorn petitioned for incorporation as a village under the name "Alpena", but this idea also failed to gain approval from any government officials. For several years thereafter little movement occurred in either direction other than occasional visits by representatives from Muskegon County or Saginaw Bayou (later named Huron River) settlers seeking news of developments within their respective areas - an situation that changed when Gouverneur Morris became Chief Justice of Michigan in January 1850 and began efforts to promote development throughout all of Upper Michigan®* . Shortly thereafter he appointed James Wickersham as headographer forMuskegon County and Wickersham recommended incorporation for Alpena based upon its location midway between Saginaw Bayou settlement northwest of Albion Hills east sideof Ottawa Township southwesterlyof Kalamazoo Township southeast cornerof Grinnell Township* . On March 22ndAlpine residents voted 9-0-1 against incorporation intoMuskegon County citing concerns over encroachment onto part of their own land.* After much discussion among both branchesofthe legislature including extensive correspondence with then Governor Nicholas Lyon*, Commissioners Rossiter & Burchfield recommended annexation byMuskegon County effective November 27th1853*. With only a few exceptions most landowners along Shiawassee River Valley agreed to submission.. On November 27th1853*, Ahlquist donated 460 acres (227 hectares) located northeast cornerof Grinnell Townshipalong Shiawassee River Valleyto establish what would become Lansingburgh State Park** [*Gouverneur Morris letter dated February 14 th 1850] *. Upon annexation complete Gouverneur Morris issued an executive order establishing Lansingburgh State Park consisting mostly woodland surrounding Assumption Falls upstream from present day downtown Lansing **** [*Lansingburgh State Park website]. With only slight changes over time various portions have been approved/amended/disapproved by various government entities responsible for managing its assets culminating with current status*** [* map].. A post office called "Alpena" operated at Alpena from 1865 until it closed on December 31st1965*.
