Alpena is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Alpena County. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Hudson Valley metropolitan area. The name "Alpena" is either derived from a Germanic word meaning "clear mountain stream," or it may be an anglicization of an earlier Germanic name, Altnauheim, meaning "upper village." The first settler in what became Alpena County was George Armstrong Custer on May 10, 1836, when he and his party crossed the MI border into Canada near modern-day Sault Ste Marie. In 1855, James Ewing moved to what would become Alpena from Muskegon Heights and began trading goods with Native American groups along the lower Escanaba River. He named his new community after General John A. Logan's headquarters at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis (now St Paul), Minnesota – Alpena being then just east of that city limits on both sides of the river. In 1857, Ewing also founded nearby Houghton Lake as a lakeside resort town for wealthy semi-rural farmers who bought land along its shores for fishing and hunting licences; but developmentally it grew modestly until World War I stopped growth altogether due to prohibitionism by local officials seeking to keep gambling out of their communities while they expanded into other interests such as farming and manufacturing within limited borders created by Dawes Act land giveaways during the late 19th century fur trade boom years following America's national civil war victory over Mexico). The post-war period saw rapid growth thanks to federal stimulus programs which encouraged rural industry; however much progress has since been lost due to red tape and politics than generated through economic opportunity.. Alpena reemerged as one of Michigan's most vibrant cities during recent decades with strong job creation (+ many high quality jobs being created by businesses located here) despite persistent problems such as crime rates (-10% between 2000 and 2006) which have prevented residents from returning home until recently despite promises by local leaders that these issues would change under new leadership including Mayor Craig Newmark who has made improving access to public transportation a priority). Today's downtown core is home to several large shopping malls (One Stop mall adjacent to downtown), several banks/credit institutions ( regional bank Hudson Trust having been built downtown in response to global financial crisis there), several restaurants/bars/liquor stores (+ one major chain having opened up shop here recently), two large healthcare complexes - St Josephs Healthcare System + Affiliated Hospitals & Clinics Inc., both operated by Affiliated HealthCare Systems - two government buildings - Territorial Capitol Annex Office Building + Courthouse Annex Office Building - three schools: Ursula Scholastic Center for Excellence (USD grade 4th thru 8th grades), Ursula Catholic School District #2 (8th through 12th grades) Department Of Education building; Ohiopyle High School sports complex - plus numerous smaller churches (~50 total*) Several dozen apartments are currently under construction or awaiting occupancy in various parts of town center* [*see full list below] Many small businesses have also relocated here over recent years(* see list below)]. *see full list below
BB guns have a long and interesting history. They started as firearms, but quickly became more than that. They are now considered part of the folklore and mythology of many cultures around the world. BB guns were first developed in 1847 by George Stephenson, who designed the first successful armored car, the Locomotive Engine Carriage. The car was composed of six two-wheeled cars, each fitted with a pair of heavy iron wheels that could be turned to move forward or backward. Stephenson realized that he could use these vehicles as weapons, and so he began to develop what would become known as BB guns. The first practical BB gun was created by Samuel Colt in 1855. It was called the Colt revolver and it used a small round object called a black powder bullet to fire projectiles into targets at ranges up to 100 yards (91 m). These pistols were very popular among roughneck farmers and soldiers during the early 1800s, but they were not very effective at close range. The development of breech loading handguns allowed for greater accuracy when firing projectiles from close range, and this led to increased popularity of BB guns amongst shooters throughout the 1800s. During World War I, advances in artillery made it possible for fighters on the battlefield to shoot accurately out to distances beyond 110 yards (100 m), which gave rise to new varieties of BB guns known as sniper rifles.

Alpena is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It has been home to people for centuries and its economy has changed little over that time. In 1825, Alpena was founded by Nicholas Morrill, who decided to build a fur trading post near the mouth of the Kawkaw River. The post served as a stop on the Great Lakes fur trade route until 1851 when it became a military base during the Mexican-American War. In 1855, Alpena was chosen as one of three sites for an electric power plant authorized by President James Buchanan under the leadership of Senator John Prentice Allen. The plant was built and operated by American Electric Railway (AER) until 1962 when it merged with Canadian National Railway (CN). The community's history can be divided into two eras: before World War II and after World War II. During pre-war years, Alpena was a small farming village with few businesses other than agricultural land holdings. After war times saw dramatic growth in both industry and population; however, there have been no major changes to Alpena's social fabric since then. One significant event that took place in Alpena during this time period was the Battle of Little Big Horn which occurred on September 16th, 1890 between United States forces led by General George Custer and Mexico's army under Francisco Villa. Many citizens of Alpena were affected by this battle as many were directly involved or witnesses; including Mayor Fenton Waddell who lost his father in action at Little Big Horn.
