Alpena, Michigan is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the east bank of the Kalamazoo River. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights–Alpena, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alpena is home to two main businesses: Alpena First National Bank and The Kneeland School District #2A. The first settlers in what is now Alpena were French Huguenots who arrived in 1796 and named their new community after Plan de la Ville, an ancient fortified town near Besançon in France. They built a log cabin at what is now North Main Street and called it "Besançon." In 1824, James Fenton bought 2/3 of town from Pierre-Jean Parent for $1,000 cash and began to build a sawmill on the current site of First National Bank which he named "Fenton's Mill." In 1827, he married Martha Jourdain and set about improving his mill by adding more water power from Canfield Dam upstream. By 1830 they had installed three floors of grindingstone ovens as well as a forge; this mill became one of the largest in its class in America when it opened its doors to customers. Fenton also started construction on what would become known as "The Kneeland School" (later known as Kincaid Elementary) which was built between 1830-1833 with funding provided by Fenton himself and others including John Davenport (founder of Davenport Cheese). In 1836-37 a school building was added on Main Street that still stands today across from First National Bank buildings vacant since 1984 while City Hall has been moved inside Eighth Avenue South between State Streets! This early educational institution helped spur economic development around Alpena through providing jobs for teachers and students until World War II when most teaching positions were replaced by technology such as computers; however Kincaid Elementary remains open today providing education opportunities for students up to grade 8th grade! In 1893-94 local physician Drs Cook & Cook constructed an addition to their home at 1014 Old Main St., later renamed Eastman Kodak Co., Inc.. Eastman Kodak continued operations here until 1972 before moving production westward into Mexico City where it remains today! Many early businesses closed down during prohibition era because alcohol could not be purchased without a special license; but many reopened after repeal including First National Bank which reopened in 1933 just 3 years after Prohibition ended! After prohibition Alpena experienced growth with several thousand residents appearing on census takers lists starting around 1940 due primarily to automotive manufacturing plants established during that time such as General Motors Corporation's Flint Assembly Plant located just southtownwest of downtown along Saginaw Boulevard soon followed by Ford Motor Company's Highland Park Assembly Plant northwest across Ionia Road soon followed by Chrysler Group's Auburn Hills Assembly Plant southwest across Woodward Avenue soon followed by other companies like these throughout post-war Detroit area making Alpena one major industrial center!During this period various cultural events took place such as The Great Lakes Folk Festival held annually at Comstock Park beginning in 1951 headlined by Joan Baez among others over successive weekends throughout late summer or early fall each year climaxing with an ice cream social featuring some top talent prior to performances outdoors under bright red stars atop Comstock Park evening sky! Numerous other large festivals were also held throughout downtown during this time such as The Big Three Jazz Festivals - all taking place outdoors adjacent Comstock Park usually Featuring prominent names amongst jazz performers starting around 1960 headlined by Miles Davis typically concluding with free concerts outdoors following dayslong jam sessions commenced within hours preceding each performance!) Ramblers' Path Walkathon - charity event benefiting Special Olympics occurring annuallylargest annual walking event ever staged averaged over 100 participants per walkathon weekend culminating with festival lunchtime concert outdoors overlooking riverfront endearing name & logo RamblersPath refers exclusively thereto!)Throughout much OFDETROIT BUSINESS WAS LOCATED IN SUBURBS FAR FROM CITY CENTER!!Today few if any automobiles are produced within city limits & most business activity takes place outside Limits......AlpenA has done quite well despite difficult times.........
