Alpena is a town in Alpena County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern border of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. One such opportunity was an opening provided by the Michigan Central Railroad which built a line through central Michigan connecting Detroit with Toledo and other northern cities during this time period. This led to increased business activity throughout the entire region which soon attracted entrepreneurs and travelers alike who decided to settle in rural areas like Alpena because it offered easier access to all types of goods and services than traditional settlements near major cities or along railway lines
Alpena was founded in 1837 by John A. Macdonald and his wife, Catharine. It was named for the Alps, where MacDonald had been born in 1824. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the confluence of the Kawkawac Creek and Eel River Rivers. In 1846, Alpena became a city and was renamed for John Prentice Marshall, who had served as U.S. Congressman from Michigan from 1865-1868 and 1870-1875.
