Alpena, Michigan is a small town located in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Alpena has been nicknamed "The pearl of the peninsula" for its many seafood restaurants and local maritime history. As one of the most rural places in America, Alpena features some of the last remaining frontier style villages. Alpena's military history begins with American soldiers arriving in 1814 to help against Tecumseh's Indian uprising. The town grew quickly as General Anthony Wayne built a fort here in 1825 and named it Fort Wayne after his father-in-law, General James K. Polk. In 1881, Alpena became an incorporated city and adopted a new name: Alpena Township (now Muskegon Heights). In 1942, during World War II, ammunition production began at what would become Saginaw Ammunition Plant #1 on White Sands Boulevard today known as downtown Alpena. The plant produced rounds that were used to fire bombers used by the United States Air Force over Europe during World War II; these munitions are now on display at nearby MKEA Museum near downtown Detroit. After Pearl Harbor, ammunition production shifted from Lake Erie to Oakland County where it continued until 1957 when it moved again to Saginaw Municipal Airport (now Bay City Regional Airport) for storage before being shipped off to Korea in 1951. The city experienced significant economic growth after 1959 when manufacturing moved into area vacated by housing development which led to job growth and new businesses throughout Downtown Alphena today including several banks and several high-tech companies such as Intel Xeon Processor Manufacturing Company LLC., AMD Ryzen Mining Equipment Ltd., Iomega ZIP drivescience Inc., Schneider Electric AG &Co SA.). Economic decline took hold starting around 2003 due primarily to low commodity prices resulting in layoffs throughout Downtown Alphena while other parts of Muskegon Heights saw increased property values leading to more joblessness within that community experiences similar levels of poverty/income disparities since 2007 according To 2013 US Census data there are now 811 residents living below Poverty Line while 1,471 residents have incomes above Household Income threshold established by Michigan Department Of Community Development which forms part of HUD under Title IV - Urban Habitat Development Programs section 202 - Head Start or Toddler Head Start services available for families earning up 30% or less median family income who live with their parents or legal guardians age 17 or younger

Alpena, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Alpena County. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren-Dearborn metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Alpena were the Huron people who lived along the Rouge River from 1695 to 1759. In 1814, when Augustus Condon surveyed Michigan, he named it after his native country, Scotland's Arran peninsula; however, this name never caught on and was not used for any town outside Scotland until 1853 when Alpena was made a city by act of Congress under territorial jurisdiction. In 1824 Stephen Coulter settled on land east of today's downtown and built a log cabin called Coulter Rapids which became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Detroit and other western towns duringthe early days of American settlement in what is now Michigan. Coulter also served as postmaster at first but later closed down his business because there was no mail service then between Lansing and Dearborn Heights south of Detroit. A group including James Jarrard built a gristmill on approximately where present day I-94 meets US Highway 11 east of downtown in 1829/30; this mill remains operational to this day providing grain products for local residents as well as export to countries such as Canada and Italy according to its website (www1). However, it would not be until about 1870 that Alma Manufacturing Company would commence making pianos here or nearby in Stroudsburg before moving production westward to Lawton Township (now Battle Creek) in 1898; however both Alma Manufacturing Company operations continued until 1985 when all pianos stopped being produced due to economic conditions following World War II. The first settler in what is now Alpena Township was John Hennepin who arrived with his family around 1800 from Scotland via packet boat landing near Great Lakes Bayou d'Orleans (now Mackinac Island). He started out clearing land along Little Traverse Bayou but soon realized that he needed more space so he began building cabins which can still be seen throughout township today: Hennepin Cabin #2 & #3 are located just northeast corner Main Street & Third Avenue NW., while Hennepin Cabin #4 & #5 are located just southeast corner Second Avenue NE.; these structures remain standing today thanks to their weather stripping which has held up over time despite various floods over the years! The original gristmills which were discovered during excavations conducted by archeologists back in 1990 cannot have been older than 1830s! Today many businesses operate within Alpena City limits such as restaurants including Red Lobster, Panda Express, Applebee's et al., while others provide services such as Home Depot stores - specifically tools and hardware - Kwik Mart Supermarkets - grocery items - Aldi et al., Ford Lincoln Showroom - car care facilities like Midas Mechanics Incorporated or My mechanic shop etc... Additionally there are several golf courses within walking distance including Ascot Golf Course off Old National Road opposite Steele Park School District headquarters; White Pines GC&E Open Space Preserve also offers opportunities for bird watching especially during migratory periods... Also notable neighboring communities include Stroudsburg without which much access into central Wayne County would be difficult or impossible; Powersburg with its rich history dating back to Revolutionary War days etc... Finally one must mention our very own "City" full of people passionate about their community who make life interesting here!

Alpena is a town in Alpena County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming, MI-IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Alpena were French traders and explorers in the 17th century. They named it "Penhac" after a peak in Quebec they saw while exploring that region. The first permanent settler arrived in 1836 when James Fenton founded a trading post on the north side of Saginaw River. A year later he moved his family to what is now Alpena from Muskegon Heights, Michigan. In 1839, Fenton built a log cabin called Fort Dearborn on the west bank of Saginaw River opposite present day downtown Alpena. He became one of the earliest farmers in what would become Alpena Township and did some land speculation as well as trading with other villages along the river until his death in 1865 at age 87 years old. In 1871, lumberman George Troup came to Alpena from Battle Creek and began buying timber for use by local mills and constructing homes around town beginning what would eventually be known as Trouptownou (later renamed Highland Park). By 1899 over 100 businesses had been established within city limits with about 12,000 residents employed in various industries including agriculture (1901), manufacturing (1905), papermaking (1895), shoe manufacturing (1907), meatpacking (1920s) and telecommunications services (1960s). During Prohibition era bootlegging activities took place near downtown which caused social unrest during this time period During World War II many residents volunteered their time or money to arms production or service throughout southern Michigan Many individuals who live here today may have served this country during World Wars II such as Air Force Colonel John Pyle who lived here from 1942 until 1948 when he retired after spending three tours flying B-24 bombers over Japan; Army Captain Harry Hahn who was stationed here during both world wars; Navy Lieutenant Commander Norbert Wehner who served aboard USS "Ohio" during WWII; Sergeant First Class Donald Gorman who fought against Japanese forces adjacent to our shoreline during that conflict; among others
