It is located on the Alpena River near its confluence with the Saginaw River. The name comes from Alpenny Hill, which is located nearby. The first permanent settlement in what is now Alpena was made by fur traders in 1805 during their survey of the area for a future fur trade post. The town got its start as a small logging and farming community in 1836 when John Denton organized settlers to build a trading post along the Saginaw River between present-day White Lake and Mount Pleasant Township. A year later, Denton named his new town after George Washington's estate on Potomac Creek (now Arlington County), Virginia; this renamed town became known as "Washington." When Indian attacks began in 1837, Fort Harrison was built to protect settlers against them and it became known as "Harrisonburg." In 1843, local merchants petitioned for incorporation as a village because they saw an opportunity to sell goods directly to consumers rather than through traders or agents who would middleman profits for them. On July 15 of that year, incorporation papers were filed with Supervisor James Boren and approved by him on August 5th; alpena had officially become a village! In 1844, voters passed an ordinance establishing coins as currency; this led to increased business activity around the new village center because people could now purchase goods without having to worry about money being tight enough to buy anything else!
