That all changed with the invention of the Laser Sighting Unit (LSU) in 1984 by Dr. Sheldon Brown of Israel’s Atrecht Science Institute. The LSU was a small, hand-held device that used a light beam to track an object in real time and provide aiming instructions to the user. It revolutionized laser sight technology and allowed handgunners around the world to shoot targets at long range without ever having to leave their home or office. The LSU was later adapted and improved by Professor Ray Vander Laan of Ball State University in Indiana, creating the Laser Rangefinder Unit (LRU) which became widely available in 1990. With its large LCD display, LRUs offered several advantages over earlier devices: they could be used both indoors and outdoors; they could track moving objects; they could be connected directly to a computer for real-time targeting data collection; and they could be calibrated for different ammunition types. By 1998, more than 1 million LRUs had been purchased worldwide by gunmakers throughout the world. Today, laser sights remain an essential part of firearms training and competition practice, providing shooters with accurate aim at long range while saving time and energy on target acquisition. Allen Park is a city in and the county seat of Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 33,687 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Combined Statistical Area. The city was named after General John A. Allen, who led American forces in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Michigan from 1875 to 1879. The town site was surveyed by John Saginaw in 1824 and purchased from Nicholas Biddle in 1830. The first permanent settler arrived in what is now Allen Park on July 8, 1830, when Elijah Hicks sold him 640 acres (2 km²) of land near what is now Plymouth Road for $5 per acre ($100 total). In 1835, James Worthy platted a townsite called "Allen" on land that he had purchased from Nicholas Biddle. In 1840, Jens Jensen bought out Worthy's interest and cleared and built a cabin on the site of present-day Pioneer Square Shopping Center. Many other settlers followed Jens Jensen throughout the 1840s and 1850s; however, no town center or infrastructure was developed until after 1861 when City Hall was built on State Street between Huron Avenue and Cass Avenue (the current site of Comerica Bank). By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Allen Park. In 1871 local physician Drury Calkins organized a meeting to discuss various problems facing the town including lack of water supplies due to an absence of any major rivers within its boundaries; high school enrollment which could not keep up with increasing population growth; limited economic opportunities because there were no factories or mills close by; inadequate sewage systems which caused typhoid fever to become an issue; etc.; however it never took formal action because most citizens wanted to work closer to home rather than build their own village hall/library/citizen's forum where they would be responsible only themselves instead of having one centralized authority overseeing everything).
