The city's name comes from General James Kossuth's encampment on the banks of the South River during the 1848 Black Hawk War (the Battle Of Ford), which occurred near present-day Allen Park Boulevard and First Street. In 1870, with land grants from President Ulysses S. Grant, Allen Park was laid out as a town on a township line that would eventually be incorporated into Lansing.[2] On January 1st 1913,[3][4] due to concerns about potential flooding caused by heavy rains across much southern Michigan during that year's freeze/thaw event,[5][6][7] Lansing incorporation as a city did not take place until December 12th 1915[8]. At its incorporation, Lansing had an estimated population size between 2700[9] – 4000[10][11], although this number only included people living within City Limits or inside newly annexed areas such as East Side Village (1915).[12][13] As time passed more residents began moving away from Lansing for various reasons (including increased crime rates,[14]), their numbers gradually dwindled until all but one block inside City Limits were left unincorporated after 1967 when annexations took place to other nearby townships including West Bloomfield Hills (1991), Ann Arbor Heights (1996), Royal Oak(2002) and Farmington Hills (2007). Effectively shrinking its boundaries still further since then has resulted in only around 8000 citizens currently living within City Limits today[15]. The city is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first settlement in what became Allen Park was made by prospectors who came to that area during the early 1800s seeking rich gold and silver mines. A post office was established at Allen Park on January 10, 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 29, 1837. The first settler to come to what became Allen Park was Nicholas Janssen, known as "Dutchman Nicholas." He arrived from New York on July 3, 1824 with his family and took up land that now forms part of east side of downtown Detroit. In 1830 Dutchman John Jacobsen arrived from Holland with his family also settling near present day White Marsh Road and Trucksville Road east of today's Dearborn Avenue. In 1835 Italian American Luigi Ambrosetti settled along Canning Street between White Marsh Road and Dearborn Avenue where he built an inn which still stands today as Old Luigi's Bar & Grill. Ambrosetti had left Italy after being persecuted for his religious beliefs by then King Ferdinand II of Naples; however he had returned before his fall due to a letter from President James Kiefer inviting him back into America under safe conduct just prior to his deposition by Napoleon III while visiting England consecrating a Catholic church located withinAllen Park (the exact location still remains unknown). This event helped lead to increased immigration into this area over time making Allen Park one of the most diverse cities throughout its history - something that can be seen even today as people from all over continue moving into this rapidly gentrifying city center despite rising rents/costs associated with high-density development around them! As more settlers came through town they began purchasing property parcels hereabouts – some forming businesses like Grosse Pointe Farms Store (founded 1865), Fenton Furniture Warehouse (1867), Cement Works & Sales Co.(1872), Richter Bros.' Clothing Store(1875) – soon creating what would become their own residential or commercial district surrounding their stores/businesses: Eastern Boulevard which extended eastward from present day Woodward Avenue thence southwesterly past current day McNichols Boulevard then northeasterly past current day Haggerty Boulevard; Greektown–later called simply "Allen"– extending northwesterly from presentday Woodward Avenue thence easterly past present day Gratiot Avenue then southerly past currentday Wabash Avenue; Highland Park–originally called simply "Park"–extending westward from presentday Woodward Avenue thence southwesterly pastpresentday Ionia Heights Drive then northeasterly pastcurrentday Adams Boulevard; Southfield Center—originally called simply "Southfield"–extending northwestward from presentday Woodward Avenue thence easterllypastpresentday Plymouth Place Drive then northeasterlypastcurrentday Stocksbridge Drive including parts of both Corktown neighborhoods currently bordered by Foster Road on the northeast corner while also bordered by Brushy Creek on its eastern edge; two short blocks were annexed adjacent to Central District following incorporation therein in 1903: Midtown Township including areas now bounded by Gratiot Ave., Telegraph Rd., Whitney Blvd., Seymour Rd., and Huron River on its western edge while also bordered by Brushy Creek on its eastern edge forming what is nowconsidered Downtown Eastside); finally Outer Southeast Side which included much of Auburn Hills until it too Became an incorporated municipality within Wayne County following incorporation therein in 1907.; these boundaries are still somewhat approximate owing primarily to changing natural landscape features over time A referendum held November 11th, 1904 resulted in passage of a charter amendment establishing City Hall at 222 West Main Street where it remains today thanks largely to Mayor Charles Abbott's tireless work fundraising money for both construction costs ($500K) plus monthly rent($5M) - amounting ultimately To $40M Dollars! In addition thereto Abbot successfully campaigned for re-election every year thru 1917 thus becoming one half-way responsible for continuing City Hall's operations even unto our current date! Allen Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Macomb County. The population was 74,569 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Macomb County after Detroit. The first settler in what is now Allen Park was John Purdy, who arrived on July 4, 1837, and named his land "Trenton Township." The township was organized on October 14, 1838. On November 3, 1840, three miles (4 km) east of present-day Allen Park by road but within the township boundaries were another two settlements: Northfield and Southfield. On March 10, 1864 it was reorganized as a town under the name of "Allen Park". On December 11 of that year it became an independent municipality when all other towns in Macomb County merged into it. On December 6th 1870 a post office called "Allen Park" opened with Wm Harnett as mailer. It continued to serve until 1974 when it moved to Dearborn Heights which then became its newmailer
