In recent years there has been redevelopment activity around downtown including apartments, office towers, retail space and a new sports arena which will be completed later this year. Allen Park was founded on December 12, 1837 by John P. Allen and James M. Barker as the first town in what is now Michigan. The town was named for General David Denny, who campaign led the Battle of September 1813 against Native Americans at Mackinac Island. The town originally consisted of only a few hundred residents and grew rapidly due to its location on the Rouge River and its connection to other settlements in the area. In 1850, the first school was built in Allen Park and within a decade, it had become one of the largest schools in Michigan. By 1860, Allen Park had reached its current size with over 1,000 residents. In 1865, a post office was established in Allen Park and soon became an important center for commerce in the area. By 1870, Allen Park had expanded to include several blocks east of Michigan Avenue and had become an important commercial center that served as a base for political activity throughout central Michigan
