Adrian, Michigan is a small city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Adrian-Ann Arbor-Niles Township CDP. It is bordered by Washtenaw County to the north and east, Muskegon Heights to the south, and Saginaw Valley to the west. The first settler in Adrian was George Haggerty who arrived in 1827. Haggerty established a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1829, John Aitken built a grist mill on what is now Ottawa Street. By 1830, Adrian had a post office and one school for students from age 6 to 12. On July 1, 1831, Adrian became an incorporated town with Wabash Avenue as its main street and two stores as its first buildings. In 1840, Jotham Noyes platted what would become Niles Township and named it after his father Nathaniel Noyes (1796-1868). Nathaniel had been born in New Hampshire and came toMichigan in 1824 as part of the wave of settlers that followed James Knoppers into Michigan during Jackson's presidency. Niles Township contained only 8 residents when it was organized on November 4, 1840; by 1850 it had grown to over 120 residents with 5 schools and 3 churches! On January 25th 1851 Wabash & Northern Railway Co., Ltd., entered into an agreement with Northwestern Railroad Company (later UIC) for transportation rights through Adrian between Chicago Illinois and Detroit Michigan via Grand Rapids MI & Windsor Ontario Canada.. This initial connection opened up new opportunities for trade within these newly formed US territories which were rapidly expanding due to issues such as gold discovery in California etc... On October 15th 1861 Wabash & Northern Railway Co., Ltd., merged with Northwestern Railroad Company (later UIC) forming The Great Western Railroad Co.. This company connected Detroit Michigan area with Buffalo NY area making this one of the most important railroads ever constructed! In 1865 Thos Alder bought out Jotham Noyes' share in The Great Western Railroad Co.. With this acquisition he took control of much of present day Adrian including all but downtown which still belonged to Wabash Avenue incorporation until 1975 when it reverted back under original name Of course everything changed again following September 11th 2001...... so I will just leave you here.......

Consequently all civilian authorities were directed to disband their departments; post offices closed; stores stopped selling goods; farmers abandoned their fields; women took up arms against Native Americans…. Prior to this time there had been sporadic Indian fights around these areas but they generally involved skirmishes rather than full scale hostilities…..In 1916 $1 million was invested in new irrigation ditches from Superior Lake across portions of Upper Peninsula CountyPlans for new homes began promptlyfollowing completionof canal system linking Superior Lake with Lakes Huron & Mackinac……..Adrian became one of first communities west of Chicagoto achieve rapid industrial growth through organizing its citizens into “residential societies” (the first such society being organized here on December 1st 1901).......Today many people believe that if not for World War II then civilization would have withered away due to lack of technological advances during that time period………………The fortuitous timing ofWWII allowed Adrian Municipal Airport (then known as M-I-L Airport)to become operational just south of town limits………………………………………Today most people alive know less about history than they did when they were children growing up here………………….
