It was founded in 1836 by John and Ann (Lambert) Adrian. lumberjacks and farmers were the mainstay of the town’s economy until the early 1900s when aluminum production began to take off in nearby Traverse City. Adrian became known as the Aluminum Capital of America for its role in this industry. The town has experienced many ups and downs over the years, but it remains an important community within its own community and region. The history of Adrian begins with one man, John Adrian. He arrived in 1836 from England looking for a new home for his family after moving away from his previous farmstead several times during his lifetime. The Adrians had been living near Grand Rapids since 1795 when they first settled on land that would become Adrian. John had married Ann Lambert when he was just 24 years old and they started farming their initial acreage around 1814-15. They soon added another two acres to their original holdings which gave them a total parcel of land of 8 strips or miles wide lying east-west along both banks of river Mecosta River north-south, bounded by woods to the east and west Hersey Creek flowing northwards into Mecosta River southward (later name changes to Hersey Township). By 1830 they were operating three sawmills on their property: one on Hersey Creek, one on Mineral Creek (now named Van Dyke), and one at what is now called Southside Road on upstream side of creek where today's Superior School stands (now part of Dexter Township). In addition to these mills, John also built a gristmill on Mineral Creek about 1840; a flour mill about 1850; a cheese factory about 1860; and finally, an electric power plant about 1870 or 1880 according as records show it went online sometime between 1870-1880 inclusive.) all these operations generated income which supportedJohn's wife Ann with her day job at home as well as providing some extra money for themselves to spend at local stores such as Grosse Pointe Lumber Company store or Allendale Store operated by cousin Walter Lambert next door across street from schoolhouse( later part renamed Allendale after merging village with adjacent townships)).
