Adrian, Michigan is known as the "Gun Mecca of the Midwest" for its number of gun stores and shooting ranges. The city was once a major center for firearms production, with manufacturers including Winchester, Remington, and Smith & Wesson. However, today Adrian is largely a tourist destination for shooters from around the Midwest. The first guns in Adrian were manufactured by Nicholas Brace in 1827. Two years later, he founded the City Gunsmithing Company to produce pistols and rifles. The company would go on to become one of the most successful firearm manufactures in Michigan. In 1851, City Gunsmithing merged with Winchester Manufacturing Company to form Winchester-Winchester Arms Corporation. The company would continue to grow and produce high-quality firearms until it went bankrupt in 1903. During World War II, Adrian served as an important supply base for the United States military. Americanarmy Ammunition Depot was located here during the war and produced ammunition for both American and Japanese weapons. Today there are still several gun stores and ranges that operate out of this facility). In 1948, Adrian became part of Michigan's Open Air Shooting Program (OASP). OASP was designed to promote recreational shooting by providing open access to firing galleries, range facilities, and other shooting areas across the state. The purpose of a gun target is to provide practice in shooting by shooting at it. Gun targets are made from many different materials, including paper, plastic, metal, and even cups. The most popular types of gun targets are those made from paper. Paper targets can be easily converted into wooden targets with a few simple steps. To make a paper target, first cut the target into small pieces using a sharp knife or scissors. Then soak the pieces in water for about 20 minutes so that they will soften and become pliable. Once softened, place the pieces on a lightly floured surface and press them slightly together until they are A-shaped (Figure 1). Next cut two circles out of the center of each piece of Target 1 (Figure 2). Finally, cut four more circles out of the top layer of Target 2 (Figure 3) so that they form an 8-point star shape (Figure 4).
