The town of Adrian started as a post office on November 3, 1854, and was named for General Adrien De Lesseps. It grew around a flour mill and sawmill that were built in 1855 by John Cooks and Wm. Ewing. In 1860, the town had 584 residents; it became a city on July 1, 1901. In 1916 Adrian voters passed an ordinance creating public parks and playgrounds to provide recreational opportunities for local children; this ordinance remains in effect to this day. On December 8, 1941 the Japanese Empire bombed Pearl Harbor killing over 2,000 people including many citizens of Adrian; this event has been called "the worst atrocity committed on American soil." In 1978–79 Adrian taxpayers paid $2 million for planning and construction of a new library which opened in 1984. The current library building was designed by IBA Architects with funding from the State of Michigan through the Community Technology Development Act (CTDAA). The building is one of only three LEED-Certified buildings in Wayne County – along with Geraldine Roman Catholic Cathedral and Highland Park Baptist Church – and it contains more than 25 thousand books and other items used by libraries statewide.
