Adrian, Michigan is home to the world’s largest ammunition production facility. The Ammunition Manufacturing and Distributing Company (AMDC) has been manufacturing ammunition in Adrian since 1892. The Arsenal Ammunition Plant was built in 1907 as part of the city’s infrastructure development. It is one of the oldest arsenals in Michigan and is still used today for manufacturing rounds for handguns, rifles, shotguns and other firearms. The plant produces more than 200 million rounds per year. In 1968, AMDC merged with Armoury Ammunition Corporation to form Armoury-Amdun Incorporated (later renamed Midland Ammo). Midland Ammoproduced projectiles for most of the United States military until 1986 when it became a subsidiary of Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc. (SR&C), which also produced shotgun shells and rifle bullets under its own armament brand name Winchester bullet products. In 1998, SR&C divested itself of all its weapons businesses and Midland Ammo ceased production at its Adrian plant effective September 1st that year. Adrian, Michigan was founded on July 24, 1837 by Adrian Weiser and his family. The town was named in memory of General George Washington who had fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The first post office opened in 1839. In 1860, Adrian became the capital of Michigan. In 1865, Adrian became a city and was renamed after Adrian Weiser's father-in-law, John Herron. In 1898, the City of Adrian merged with the Town of Albion to form a new city government. On February 14, 1907, Adrian became a county seat for Wayne County. On October 26, 1912, the city government merged with Muskegon County to form a new county government. The old county courthouse closed in 1972 and is now used as an exhibit at the Muskegon Heights Museum In 1939 Adrian had 524 residents and 13 businesses including two banks and four grocery stores which were all closed during World War II due to wartime restrictions on lending money to war veterans In 1951 it changed its name back to Adrian again when it joined the rest of Wayne County in becoming newly organized as part of that year's revisions to Michigan's constitution
