Worcester, Massachusetts is a city in and the county seat of Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 67,796 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in New England outside Boston. The first optical equipment store in Worcester was founded by two brothers, James and John Fenton in 1828. They were selling telescopes and other optical instruments to individuals and businesses. In 1851, Charles Goodyear opened the first grocery store in Worcester City with optics as one of its products. In 1865, Samuel Morse established his Morse Optics Company on Main Street to sell optic materials and lecturers on optics education. The company stayed open until it merged with Associated Military Stores Incorporated in 1968 to become United States Optics Corporation (USO). USO became one of America's leading suppliers of optoelectronic products including video cameras, digital scales, lasers and light bulbs until it ceased operations in 2011. In 1938, General Electric began manufacturing electronic components for military use at their plant on North Broad Street near downtown Worcester. This made Worcester an early center for electronics production because GE had a large presence there throughout World War II military-industrial complex development across many industries during the era before transistor technology made mass producing electronics easier than ever before During World War II local munitions factories produced more than 1 million tons of ammunition per day from crude oil input through refining to finished weaponsgrade explosives; this amounted to almost half of all materiel used by USAAF Bomber Command Worcester has been home to three major astronomical observatories: American Museum of Natural History Observatory (1875), Royal Observatory (1898), and Lowell Observatory (1936). These institutions have served as research laboratories for astronomers studying objects within our solar system and beyond while also providing public outreach programs such as observing campaigns such as First Quarter Moon Eclipse observations by Lowell which helped spread knowledge about celestial mechanics among amateur astronomers around the world
