Worcester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 34,876 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Worcester County and one of the five towns in Worcester city limits. The total land area of Worcester is 23 square miles (60 km2). The history of Worcester began with English settlers in 1630 who named it Wicomico after Sir Nicholas Wicomico, an explorer and governor of Virginia. In 1764, the town was taken by British troops during the American Revolution. The first meeting of what would become the Town Council took place on October 20, 1764. In 1836, Congress approved a charter for Worcester which granted it municipal status and made it an independent city within the Boston metropolitan area on December 1st. On July 15th 1870, incorporation as a city occurred with Joel Chandler Harris as Mayor. On November 9th 1888, fire destroyed much of downtown including many churches and business buildings; this event is commonly known as "The Great Fire". In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson visited Worcester to deliver his famous address on public education reform before leaving for Paris where he helped create World War I. In 1924–1927 local radio station WBZO-AM featured daily news reports from Washington D.C., Indianapolis (the home of American Motors Corporation), Cleveland (the hometown of encyclopedias publisher Houghton Mifflin Company) and other cities across America from wire service reporters based out of studios located along Asylum Street in downtownWBZO's transmitter tower overlooking First Parish Church
