When Worcester, Massachusetts was founded in 1636 by Puritan settlers, the town had only a few shotguns. The first gun mag in town was opened in 1792. The Worcester gun magazine industry in the early 1800s was one of the most prolific and successful in New England. The first publication produced in Worcester was the "Worcester Gazette" in 1824. The paper was founded by Alexander McGowan and his brother-in-law, Dr. John Fenton, both farmers who had a interest in promoting arms and hunting; they published an occasional column on local sportsman's topics. In 1827, McGowan hired John J. Brown as editor of the paper, which became known for its progressive politics and openhanded editorial efforts. Brown helped to expand the circulation of the paper to over 100,000 readers before its closure in 1832. During this time period, other publications also began appearing throughout Worcester; including "The Patriot" (1829), "The Republican" (1830), and "The Daily Advertiser" (1834). These papers were all independently owned and operated until 1836 when they merged into what is now known as The Worcester Enterprise Newspaper Company Ltd., which still publishes its editions today. After being closed for many years, the final issue of the "Worcester Gazette" was published on April 3, 1865; three days after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C..
Worcester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,813 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest town in Worcester County and the seventh-most populous municipality in New England. The name of the town comes from Waverly Manor which was once part of Ipswich until it was sold to Worcester by Puritan settlers in 1638. The first permanent settler in what would become Worcester was Nicholas Soares who arrived with his kinsman John Winthrop on November 14, 1635. Soares had come to Northampton County from Portuguese Manassas Parish, Virginia with his family and other colonists following King Charles I's revocation of the English charter for that colony on April 9, 1636. The original settlement near present day First Street and Meeting Place may have been as small as 10 individuals but soon enough there were over 20 people living thereabouts among some 27 families also claimed within Ipswich parish. In October 1638 two more men were sent overland from Boston under an agreement reached between Governor Philip Carteret and Cromwell’s general garrison at Bunker Hill; these were John Greenough and Samuel Gorton Jr.. Greenough landed at Weymouth on October 25th while Gorton came ashore three days later at Double Island about 3 miles south of present day Webster Avenue near where Copley Square now stands. Soon after this initial arrivals many more people began moving into what would become Worcester from surrounding towns including: Watertown (now Stratford), South Chelmsford (now Foxboro), Westborough (now Acton), Leicester (now Lexington), Newton Abbot (later Dona Ana), Fall River, Needhampton (later Quincy), Framingham (later Malden) and Springfield. A year later on December 12th 1639 Nathaniel Eaton Came with 8 others “travelling by water unto Cambridge” & landed at Weymouth about 2 miles east of today's Market Square downtown across river Frome Road – he had been granted land along river bank north side Of Common ontoimproved wharf they called Piscataqua Landing before main road got built here – new home became Eaton House still standing today just off corner current Main & State Streets east side Of common On January 1st 1737 Increase Mather purchased 275 acres of land east of modern day Washington Street including all that lies between Congaree Swamp to the south then northerly towards Andover MA border to include present day Sutherland MA farmsteads Lots Nos 1-5 together went for $2750 Mather named this tract Menotomy meaning "meeting place". This area lay mostly undeveloped until 1790 when road building started draining away swamp memory lands giving rise to current names such as Menotomy Swamp Way or Mather Swamp Rd., thenceforth known primarily as State Route 30/Route 128 which runs through most parts now included within city limits
