Worcester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 31,845 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in the county and the second-largest municipality within Worcester County after Boston. The name of Worcester comes from Wostocka Farmstead in nearby Leicester. The first permanent English settlers in what is now Worcester Township were those who founded Leicester on the river Andover on May 12, 1629 by John Winthrop and his brother Samuel. In 1630, they erected a small fort to protect their new settlement from French incursions and named it Fort Winthrop after themselves. The first meeting of the township's first board of selectmen was held on December 12, 1630; its present form can be traced to that date. On July 1, 1764, much of Worcester Township became part ofBoston when that city was incorporated as an independent district under the jurisdiction of Middlesex County.[1] On October 25th of that year,[2] Boston granted land east of Dudley Street to fouretherwise scattered settlers seeking exemption from paying assessments for common school education and military training which were then required by ordnance laws passed during King George III's War (1757-63). These pioneers were among those known as "the Palmyra Five" because they purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of modern-day Manchester Avenue between Dudley Street and Reading Road for $275 each including 20 acres (8 hectares) for a courthouse and jail[3]. Easton Congregational Church began services there on November 8th following construction on what later became Dexter Place—now Dexter Avenue—by Reverend John Eliot.[4][5] That church would become one of the most prominent buildings in town center with an attached parsonage still standing today across Dexter Avenue from South Park Drive Recreation Area near where it once served as a restaurant and video store. From this location Congregational services continued until 1851 when plans were made to build Trinity Church across Dudley Street but this project also failed when only 10 additional acres (4 hectares) could be leased for worship space within walking distance of existing homes instead than building a new structure like many others around towns throughout New England at that time.[6] A similar situation occurred with Holy Cross Parish located northwest along Dudley Street which also failed to receive consideration due to lack thereof space or financial resources despite offers totaling over $20 thousand from interested parties during its brief existence(1849-1851).[7][8][9][10] In 1853–54 two local businessmen — Elijah Howe and Job Trumbull — organized a group called "The Mechanics Association" which offered free labor for mining purposes west of Manchester Ave., adjoining what is now Watertown Common[11]. This activity helped spur development westward including Sheffield Halliday’s mills soon followed by other businesses such as Piggott’s grocery store,[12] Fenton’s sawmill[13], Morse Bros lofting business[14], McCormick & Company livery stable[15], Gurney’s drugstore[16], Ladd & Co grist mill[17], Potter Measures post office [18],[19],[20],[21],[22]; Stratton Hotel; First Congregational Church; Masonic Temple; Armory Building [23]; Powers Shoe Store [24]; Warehouse No 2 [25]; Hannibal Seminary; Griggs Millrace Dam [26]; Elmira Canal towpath extension line extending south into Newcastle
