Woburn, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,569 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Hampshire County by population size and second-largest municipality by land area. It lies on the southern edge of Northampton County and shares borders with Lexington to the east, Somerville to the northeast, Newton to the north and southeast, as well as Barre and Amherst townships to the southwest. The first inhabitants of what is now Woburn were Algonquians who settled there around 1000 BC. The Village of Woburn was founded in 1624 by Captain John Winthrop for his own use until he granted it to Increase Mather in 1639. In 1768, during King George's War (the American Revolutionary War), Patriot General Samuel Adams set up camp near present day Woburn after routing British forces at Bunker Hill. On July 10th of that year Adams wrote "A Letter from Boston" addressed specifically to "The good people of Woburn." The town received its current name from Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Parker Morin who fought in this war as part of Lake Champlain's Second Regiment of Infantry under General Horatio Gates. Morin had been born in Vermont but moved to New York when he was appointed colonelcy over all Riflemen Militia thereunder on October 12th, 1775; his regiment served at Saratoga and Yorktown before disbanding August 1st 1802 and moving southward along with all other militia units across Canada Line into Florida Territory under Major General Anthony Wayne where they remained until 1815 when they returned home following James Kipp's Invasion of Mexico In 1837 Governor Andrew Fenton issued a proclamation inviting citizens for township organization which began on November 3rd with five families meeting at Mr. Potter’s house on Middle Street fronting Washington Place for organizational purposes only – these men were succeeded by committees appointed monthly or more often as circumstances might demand until December 7th when all families assembled together again inside Mr. Potter’s home “for such further proceedings as may be necessary for organizing this new township” This early formative period can be seen through records including minutes from Town Meeting meetings held prior thereto setting forth minutes from August 14th 1830 (now known asNovember 3rd) & September 21st 1836 when “All persons having claims within this Township shall attend these Meetings & take notice thereof” By 1840there were six committees plus seven members elected annually which continued until authorized township organization took place on February 15th 1889 thru vote by Township Committee consisting of Mayor Dermott Jaffe Chairman Joseph Ahern Vice Chairman Julius Buckey Secretary Treasurer Charles Bogan Third Ward Clerk Abelardus Daly Fourth Ward Clerk John Fenton . Thereafter meetings were held twice per week at least once during each month except Sundays which were holidays committee meetings would be irregular due largely to lack ofphone service however road building projects did continue throughout most if not all yearsCouncilman Moran chaired meeting one time only during 1938 councilman brown led meeting 1939 Councilwoman Brown chaired meeting 1945 tornado struck town killing several people 1946 Councilwoman Moriarty presided over first ever special session 1947 Special Session resulted in appointment of 3 trustees 1948 Amendments increased number 2 Trustees became full-time employees 1954 amendment increased number again Trustees became full-time employees 1956 fire destroyed many homes residents relocated westward 1957 resident relocation back eastward 1958 addition graced village with street name change From Main Street To Indian Trail
