The history of Shooter Eye Protection (SEP) began in the early 1800s in Massachusetts. In 1792, a Mr. Shepherd patented an eye protection device called the Shepherd’s Hook. The device allowed shooters to protect their eyes from ricochets and other projectiles by looping a piece of metal around their necks and Warrick point shooting guns. This type of eye protection was effective, but it was not always comfortable for shooters to wear. In 1847, a group of men from Woburn, MA started manufacturing SEP devices with the help of local blacksmiths. The first versions of Shooter Eye Protection were made out of leather and brass objects that had to be fitted over shooter’s spectacles or goggles. These devices became more comfortable over time and they were also known as “Shepherd’s Hooks” because they resembled pieces of pastoral equipment used by farmers during war times. By 1897, Shooter Eye Protection had become an industry staple in many countries and it was still being manufactured today in various forms including cloth and plastic products. A group of men, including John Adams, signalled to a ship anchored off the shore that they had consumed tea overboard and planned to return with more. The sailors began firing on them as they got closer, killing five men and wounding twenty-one.

This change went into effect after an injury happened at an outdoor range where someone lost their eyesight due to recoil from firing rounds through unshielded optics
In 1911, a patent was filed for an eye protection system that would later be known as the Browning Automatic Rifle Eye Protection System. The patent was filed by John Browning and it described a design for an adjustable eyeglasses system that used lens cups that could be rotated to adjust the fit of the glasses. Additionally, the eyeglasses were said to have a reflex band which protected against accidental eye contact. The patent was eventually issued in 1912 and it is still recognized as being one of the most innovative eye protection systems ever developed.
Woburn is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,157 at the 2010 census. Woburn is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and was settled by English Puritans in 1636. It became a town on December 12, 1797. Woburn is named after Roger Williams, an early settler and founder of Rhode Island. The first permanent settlement in what is now Woburn occurred in 1636 when English Puritans landed there on the Mayflower and founded the town of Woburn following their religious trial for heresy at Salem Village. The Pilgrims were welcomed as settlers by local Native Americans who had long known about their presence because they traded with them for goods grown along the coast from Portsmouth to Plymouth. In 1797, as part of Act 26 of that year, which declared all able-bodied men over 21 years old citizens of Massachusetts regardless of sex or religion, Woburn became one of the new towns within Middlesex County. At that time it encompassed only parts of southern Worcester Township and north central Hampshire Township; today those areas are part of Springfield and West Springfield Townships respectively. That year too saw the founding of several other towns within Middlesex County: Athol (now Atholton), Bradbury (now Bradley), Dalton (now Southwick), East Bridgewater (now Fall River) and Lexington (later Lexington Heights). The first post office in Woburn opened on November 15, 1812; it closed on July 14th 1816 due to increased mail volume from Boston through New England during its heyday as a metropolis due to its Huge textile industry based around Endicott Street between King's Chapel Road and State Street. In 1835 Drury built his large brick house at 301 Main Street which remains standing today across from modern day Hallmark Cards headquarters building at 601 Main Street; Drury served as Postmaster until his death in 1840. The first store located inside what is now Hallmark Cards was called "Drury's Drug Store" before changing its name to "Hallmark Cards". In 1886 Guggenheim opened his own department store called Guggenheim's Department Store on Dudley Avenue east side main street between Summerhill Road near Central High School Bus Stop and Dudley Place east side street between Highland Park Way Driveway & Northampton Avenue; later this store merged with Harriman's Department Store Incorporated into Macy's Corporation effective February 2nd 1908 becoming Macy's Herald Square Annexe but retaining its original name including Plaza de la Independencia where most stores sharing that name now stand including flagship store - Herald Square - still under operation todayformerly known as Bloomingdale’s
