Woburn, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,846 at the 2010 census. Woburn is the largest town in Hampshire County and part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name "Woburn" is derived from English meaning "a place where wheat is grown". In 1638, John Endicott bought land in what is now Woburn from the Native Americans for $5 per acre. He built a house there on his farmstead which he called "Endick's House." In 1786, George Washington and his family settled in Woburn after fleeing persecution by the British government. They began to plant corn here and soon developed a market for their goods. By 1800, Wobush had become one of Boston's most important commercial districts. In 1824 it became a separate county; this made it possible for Woburn to develop as an agricultural center with its own county courthouse and jail. The first store in what is now downtown Woburn opened on Main Street in 1834. It was known as the Merchants Exchange Building because it served as the local meeting point for merchants who traded with other towns and villages around central Massachusettes (now Cambridge). That year also saw the erection of the first school building in town-the Masonic Temple School-and incorporation as a village! In 1855, when Worcester County was created out of parts of central Massachusettes (now Worcester), Woburn became its capital city under then-Governor Edward Everett Hale! When that county was abolished in 1901, all but 1/3 of its territory went to Hartford County! The economic development of downtown Woburn has been dramatic: during World War II many businesses closed down due to rationing; however, since then much business growth has come about through new construction including several high-rise buildings dating back to 1967 including One Stanley Place which overlooks Interstate 90 just south of downtown . Downtown also includes four restaurants/cafes/bars: ABC Diner; Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream; Dunkin' Donuts; and The Pizza Place which fronts I-290 . Woburn, Massachusetts is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Rte 128 corridor and is home to Woburn High School and Woburn Stadium. The first Europeans to see what is now Woburn were traders who passed through on their way from Boston to Cambridge in 1630. They named it "Winchester" because of the high mountains that can be seen from the town's square. In 1714, Benedict Arnold, an American general during the Revolutionary War, purchased land in what is now Woburn from Nicholas Soohegan for $1 million dollars. The village grew rapidly with many new residents coming by boat or wagon as transportation became available only after1720 when inland shipping became available on Lake Ontario. In 1837, Woburn was incorporated as a village under charter from Massachusetts General Court No. 611. On July 1, 1842, it merged with other villages around Waltham to form the towns of Quincy and Brockton (the merger never came into effect because Brockton voted not to join). In 1907-1908, local farmers formed a cooperative extension service known as the Worcester Agricultural Society which gave people access to fresh produce at local markets year-round without going out of their way to buy food in person. This system eventually fell victim to market saturation and declined in popularity; however it remains an important part of town history today."
