The town was first settled in 1636 by Puritan colonists from England. It was incorporated as a township in 1786. Woburn became a city on April 15, 1871, when it merger with the neighboring towns of Arlington and Belchertown. The merged cities had a combined population of over 100,000 people and were home to two universities: Worcester Polytechnic Institute (now Worcester State University) and Brown University. In 1907, Woburn annexed the neighboring village of Northborough which had been part of Belchertown since 1786 but until then had been self-governing with its own school district and government. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 19,921 people residing in the town. Of these 15% were under 25 years old; 24% were 25–54; 29% were 55–74; 23% were 75+ years old; and 9% were over 85 years old. The racial makeup of Woburn was 98% white (non-Hispanic), 1% black or African American; 0%. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2%, while 3% did not answer this question. As compared to other communities in Massachusetts that have populations above 30%, Woburn’s percentage is relatively low because it does not include any heavily populated areas such as Springfield or Malden where more than 60% white residents live according to state figures for 2006-2010 .

Woburn is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. It lies within the Greater Boston metropolitan area. Woburn is one of two towns in Massachusetts that are still designated "villages" by the state government; the other is Andover. The first settler in what would become Woburn was John White in 1638. A road from Ipswich to Woburn was built through the town by 1796 and named after Captain Jonathan Gist of HMS Beagle fame who explored what is now New England during his circumnavigation of 1801-1802. In 1814, Colonel Nathaniel Parker bought land around present-day Woburn and began to build a house there which he called Parker's Grove. He also laid out roads leading into the town and named them for himself including Park Street, Prospect Street, and Arlington Road (now Arlington Ave.). By 1830, all of modern-day Woburn had been established as part of Ipswich Township with its own post office and school district. During World War I, many soldiers were housed at General Electric Works on Beacon Hill which became known as "The Hill". The barracks were converted into housing for workers early in 1920s when GE opened its proprietary Redwood Shops development nearby on Commonwealth Avenue across from Fenway Park that featured products made by GE subsidiaries such as Hormel Foods and Krups Food Company until 1982 when they merged with ConAgrafoods Incorporated to form ConAgra Foods Group plc.. In 1928, architect George Bulfinch designed the current Town Hall building which replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1798 which burned down in 1903 while being used as a public library. On July 1st of every year since 1975 residents havethave voted on adopting a new name for their townhall complex including "Woburn Village Center". A large millinery store located near present day Route 14 closed down in 1991 due to bankruptcy but reopened under new ownership later that year with more varietyNow located at 7 Elmira Rd - formerly Bankers Trust & Trust Co.'s Elmira branch). In 2003 Middlesex County completed construction of Interstate 95 bypassing downtown causing much contention between businesses along First St., Main St., Meetinghouse Rd., Indian Trail Rd., Walnut Ave./Route 24/Old Post Rd./and Old Coach House Rd./all located mostly inside today's intersection of Meetinghouse Road/Route 24N&Rd.; most affected being several local clothiers/veterans' groups who boycott I-95 because access Blvd abuts their property) . After years of protest MassDOT relocates I-95 overpass onto Meetinghouse Road just east side thereof creating temporary business districts parallel streets running northwesterly from original meetinghouse site)
