Woburn is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Woburn's history dates back to 1636 as Wenham, and it became a town in 1768. The name "Woburn" is an anglicized form of "Wenham" which means "settlement by the river". In 1636, English colonists built Fort Wenham on the south bank of the Mystic River in what is now Woburn. It served as a military post during King Philip's War and later as a trading post between England and France. The present-day downtown areas were built during the late 19th century around this military installation and trading post. However, most of Woburn's development took place after World War II when its population exploded due to technological advances such as television and radio broadcasting in nearby Boston. The first churches were erected in Woburn in 1636 including one called Christchurch which was dedicated by Governor John Winthrop on December 15th that year. There are still remains of several colonial buildings from that time including The Old North Meeting House which has been restored and now serves as a museum inside the old town hall complex (pictured above) . Other early churches included Oneida or Whitefriars Church located on Main Street across from present day City Hall (pictured below). This church was founded by Congregationalists who had fled religious persecution near New York City In 1768, when Woburn became a town, it annexed part of Amherstburg Township thereby forming what is today known as Amherst District . In 1834 there was another annexation making Woburn an unincorporated community once again separate from Amherst District Through much of its history WobURN has been home to many distinguished residents including Congressman Eliot Cutler who represented MA 3rd Congressional District from 1955-1959; General Electric cofounder George Westinghouse; banker Julius Rosenwald; photojournalist Edward Steichen; author Huckleberry Finn author Mark Twain; business entrepreneur Cyrus Avery among others The downtown district contains many businesses such as Sears & Roebuck Inc., Macy’s Department Store, BankBoston Corporation headquarters building #1 (pictured below), Intel Inside Technology Center ITC - formerly known affectionately simply “ITC” or Inspirationpointe Plaza shopping center - Gannett Building – home to MassLive Media Company since 2001 - Wells Fargo Branch headquartered since 1907 - Mastercard Headquarters located just off Interstate 91 north side with over 150 jobsites across 4 floors currently under construction - PNC Financial Services Headquarters just across US 1A adjacent to Toll plaza with over 350 jobsites across 12 floors currently under construction along with numerous other businesses According to the 2000 census there are now over 25 ethnic groups living within walking distance of each other making it one very diverse community while also being relatively affordable for those looking for quality housing options There are multiple parks within close proximity including: Fenway Park which features Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum next door/the ballpark itself along with Fenway Park South (a new park created in 2002) , Harvard University Medical School Campus Recreation Area directly east featuring squash courts, fenced off pond and dog park etc., Newton Elementary School playground directly west facing Dudley Road aka “Newton Playground Way” containing two baseball diamonds,, Wellesley Mills Mall open space composed mostly of greenfield land bounded by Wellesley Street on one side & Dudley Road on another side bordered by Holyoke Avenue between them), Worcester Polytechnic Institute campus immediately northeast corner bounded by main road & parking lot then borders city limits thenceforth woodsandstreams Waterfront Trail running northeasterly parallel to main road past reservoir into Worcester County
