Woburn is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,763 at the 2010 census. Woburn's first settlement was founded in 1630. It became one of the many towns to be incorporated as villages in Massachusetts when that state became a republic in 1788. Woburn is located on the border of Bedford and Northampton counties, 12 miles (19 km) east of Boston and 14 miles (24 km) south of Worcester. The town was established on the site of an earlier Indian village which had been abandoned by its occupants due to bad weather and military pressure from nearby settlements such as Ipswich and Marlborough. The original settlers were Puritans who arrived in what is now Woburn during the English Civil War in 1649-50. By 1701, there were more than 100 people living here, some of whom may have been indentured servants brought over from British America. In 1768, when Worcester County was created out of Bedford County, Woburn became part of it and continued to function as an independent town until 1803 when it merged with Northampton County under one government system known as "the commonwealth." After Commonwealth separation, Woburn reverted back to its traditional name: "Woburn". In 1834, part of what is now Cambridge University began construction on what would become one of the world's largest universities; this led to increased competition for jobs within the small town which saw its population drop by half between 1840 and 1860 while enrollment at the college rose by 75%.
