The first settler in what would become Woburn was George Washington and his family who arrived there in 1639. The first house built there was on Meeting Street and it burned down in 1814. The present day courthouse stood on Union Square until 1959 when it moved to its current location on Route 9 north of Commonwealth Avenue. In 1768, Samuel Adams organized a group of farmers to purchase two hundred acres (twenty-six hectares) of land for $1 per acre from Nicholas Biddle and begin to build a farmstead called "Wenham". That same year, Reverend John Eliot founded the Congregational Church there which still stands today (dedicated by President Barack Obama on October 6th 2009). In 1793, Nathaniel Eaton bought an additional four hundred acres (ninety-six hectares) for $10 per acre from Biddle and began development of what would become Eaton's Elmwood Farms estate which still stands today as one of the largest residential estates in New England. He also developed Woburn Common into one of the most beautiful open spaces remaining in New England – home to many horse stables and other agricultural uses until it was donated as public land to Woburn Township by Drury Land Company developer James Cushingworth in 1913–15. Woburn is one of the oldest towns in the United States and was first settled by English colonists in 1630. The town was named after William Woburn, an early settler. The town's beginnings can be traced back to 1630 when English colonists founded Woburn on the south shore of Lake George in Middlesex County. The original settlers were led by Captain John Winthrop and his son Rear Admiral John Winthrop II. In 1633, Captain Samuel Winslow purchased land from the French for $1 million dollars. This purchase helped make Woburn one of the most important settlements on Long Island Sound. In 1714, General James Fitzroy took over command of British forces during King Philip's War and ordered all Native American villages on Long Island Sound to surrender their weapons or be burned alive. One such village was located near present-day Woburn. When Fitzroy arrived at this village, he found it abandoned and burned everything inside including the inhabitants' homes and food supplies. This event is known as "Fitzroy's Massacre". After King Philip's War ended in 1715, many of these newlyFounders decided to stay in New England instead of returning home with their weapons because they weren't sure if they would ever again face war or persecution from their own government. Many people who had originally left for America returned home during this time period including Captain John Winthrop III who built a house called "Winchester" within walking distance of where his father had landed two years earlier on December 11th, 1629 BC (the date that Plymouth Rock was discovered). Every year since then some part of Winchester has been dedicated as International Memorial Day for Patriots Who fight For Liberty Against Tyranny
